Need some Tech help
Today on my way to work i was crusin at about 35, i went to pass a car in front of me and there was about a short delay from when i pressed the gas and when the engine actually moved. Is this something i can ajust and if so how. Iam still a newbie to workin on cars so a description on how to fix this would help a ton, thanx in advance.
well a few questions.
1. what type(brand and octane) do you use it does matter.
2. Have you had a tune up recently.
3. Do you have MPFI(multi port) you did not specify the year. But how long has it been since you have run some injector cleaner through the fuel system.
4. Did the engine bog, or just not rev. Bog=sounds like a vacuum cleaner fell on its face.
But if it did not bog, but just refused to rev up check the timing first. Then to the plugs.

Well, if you're a newbie, I have the perfect way for you to "get into it" - the Major Tuneup. It's all described in this old message: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/000545.html
You'll need the Haynes 82-92 Firebird (or Camaro) manual, found in parts stores like Pep Boys, for $12. That'll tell you where everything is; my message above tells you everything you need to replace. The major tuneup isn't rocket science; and all you really need is a set of wheel ramps ($30), wheel chocks to block the wheels ($10), and a $40 socket set. Sounds like a good $80 present from your parents/girlfriend/whoever!

YOu should be scared of messing something up.
I have so many times.
Just figure out a a back up plan when ya goof up.
Figure out that plan before you start working on the car. Then have some fun!!
You will.
Ramps work ok.
Just don't drive over the edge!!
You do have metric tools, right!?!?

The message link I gave you tells you everything you need to replace.
If you're worried about scratching the bottom on ramps, you can lay down 2" x 6" boards before the ramps. Drive onto the boards, then drive onto the ramps. You could even stack the 2x6's to get "less of an angle".. that way your bumper could clear.
You shouldn't screw anything up with a major tuneup.. don't worry, it's easy. The only thing you -could- screw up on is the plug wires- if you put them on, in the wrong order, on the distributor cap, the car will barely run- if it runs at all! It's easy to avoid that, though. Here's a tip- Before I start work on any car, even my own!, I'll make a diagram. I draw the engine and the distributor cap, and draw how the wires go from the motor to the cap. One thing to note- our #1 cylinder is in a different spot than the other 99% of engines out there! Our #1 cylinder is the frontmost PASSENGER side cylinder- every other engine uses the driver's side. So-
rear bumper of car
cyl 5....cyl 6
cyl 3....cyl 4
cyl 1....cyl 2
front bumper of car
Altho honestly if I were you, I wouldn't touch the car at all until you were in New York. When I go on vacation, I'm careful not to do anything with the engine a few weeks before I drive across states!

BUT
if you did not include a cap and rotor change, you sure should!
Accel makes great stuff and it's about $20 or so.
