HELP?!? new car no idea what im doing

Hi guys i just bought a 85 firebird with the 2.8 V6 in it and it was overheating
so what i did was i replaced the water pump and thermostat

so a couple hours later i thought i was good it seemed fine until i smelled and saw smoke from my head -_-

and since i have the dummy gauges i can't see the temp on the dash i killed it and thought that it might be the fan. Andy ideas before i invest in a new fan??

thank you all you are the best

check the fluid levels and that you don't have any leaks, but sounds to me like it wasn't overheating, possibly something came in contact with the exhaust manifold(ie. a wire most likely) and started to melt, could also have a crack in the block or something else unpleasant, but the idiot light if working would come on if the temperature reached past nominal levels.

If the valve cover gasket leaks oil onto the exhaust manifold, that'll make smoke.
