dextcool or standard antifreeze

I JUST REPLACED THE WATER PUMP ON MY 89 2.8L V6 CAMARO. IT IS A NEW ALUMINUM PUMP AND THEY RECOMMEND DEXCOOL? I BOUGHT DEXCOOL TO USE AND THEN REALIZED THE HEATER CORE WILL BE FULL OF STANDARD ANTIFREEZE. HOW DO I ACHEIVE THIS, EMPTY OLD ALL TOGETHER OR USE OLD INSTEAD???

I'd stick with the standard stuff. Your water pump won't care what you've got inside. Hell, you could run straight water and your pump would be fine... they just want you to buy the dexcool, that's all.

Hmm...the only reason im using dexcool is because ive done 2 water pumps on this car, the first one was using regular coolant, not dexcool, and a lot of corrosion, rust, etc was in the waterpump and sorrouding passages, when i used dexcool i didnt see that..

It has better anti-rust properties? That's cool; I wasn't saying to "not use Dexcool". I was just saying that the pump doesn't require it... I myself have never done a complete drain/flush/fill. The most I've done is fill the rad with water, run the car, then drain the radiator, and add 50/50 coolant mix.

I had a timing chain cover burst open from corossion/rust.
From now on, I atleast use anti-freeze.
ONLY WATER, until I make damn sure it don't leak no more!

DEXCOOL ALL THE WAY. I noticed my cars likes it a *hit load better. Before I changed the thermo it was about 10 deg cooler. Now the radiator is alot more debris and crud free.

Ive heard bad things about dexcool contamination problems mostly. But in general Its not to bad other than that. I do agree with Ked, only use water until your sure nothing is leaking or else you might be leaving $ spots on the driveway
