Here's what ya do & save 90% of your time.
Go get 1985 & above MPFI heads.
Rebuild them & new guides.
Go get same cam from that style (MPFI 2.3/3.1) engine
Rebuild distributor Hop up ignition, new coil.
Rebuild carb
THEN FOR FUN!
Go get a spare 2.8 regular intake (from a S-10 Blazer if ya wanna, CHEAPER)
Go get a Holley 500CFM 2-bbl.
Modify the factory intake for the Holley.
Grind down space between the openings and drill four new holes.
Instant Edelbrock intake!
Edelbrock is only for switching the tops (carbs), has no true gain at all over stock intake. This is what GM recommends, too.

That's what I've done to my truck engine.
Once it's better (I have to swap oil pumps now), it'll run stronger.
You can get all this stuff from the yards for cheaper than it'll cost ya to buy the Edelbrock intake set up (about $250.00-ish).
Buy gaskets at 800-831-0884 Norhtern Auto Parts.
