You can fry something in the ECM... I don't know exactly what, though. Whatever it is, you need another ECM to fix it. I think it's something that happens 1 out of 2 occurances, but that's a pretty high risk, in my opinion...

I might be a little off the subject, but I was wondering if the Chilton's manual I read is correct (for 88-90 F-bodies), because it says if you have the engine on and running, and you ground A & B, the EST is disabled and you can check the timing.

Ah-Ha! No wonder I couldn't find an EST bypass connector to set timing on that '89 Camaro I worked on... ya know, the one we did the 2.8/2.8 swap on. Altho Kevin S has an EST connector... hm.
Yeah supposedly you can have the jumper in with the engine off, and have the jumper in with the engine running, but you can't start the engine with the jumper in place.

I did this by mistake the other day. When I started my car with ports A&B connected the SES light did a continous blinking thing, so I shut my car off in a hurry, and there appears to be no damage.

Hehe, yeah my dumba$$ started my car once while A & B where jumped.....it wasn't pretty. My engine made some nasty sound and it was idleing VERY irratically. I shut it off QUICK....no (obvious?) damage done. Guess i got lucky.

i read somewhere that if you have them connected with the engine running, the way the SES light is flashing will tell you if you are running in open or closed loop mode.

Yep, it's the speed of the flash... I think a fast flash is open loop, and a slow flash is closed loop?
89V6, his Camaro had a butchered wiring job done to it; I never got around to tracing wires (before the car got junked!), but I finally decided the previous owner had eliminated the connector for a piece of wire, and tucked it away in the harness somewhere. Where was your EST bypass connector? Was it right above the heater/evaporator box on the firewall? We looked all around there and didn't find any black/tan wire at all!
