Is my rearend going out?
Is my rearend going out?
Well, considering I have a v6, I thought it was open diff. I was driving a friend around last night, and he's thinking about buying it, and asked me to show him what it'll do, so I stopped the car, held the brake and started in first. The right tire broke loose, the car turned sideways, and then the left one broke loose, and straighted the car out, and I took off. Kinda made me think. So assuming that I was dreaming, I went back today, and sure enough there were not 1, but 2 black tire strips.....now I've heard that if I do have open, 2 stripes means that it's going out. Is this wrong?
I have had this happen to my 91... HEres what i think.... First with airbags in the springs you CAN tune a open rearend to act like a posi, you just load the passenger side with more air then the drivers side - actualy its abit more then that but basically thats it. When i am alone my passenger side breaks before my side - why? weight on the wheels of course. In rain however i can get both lit if i do it fast. Now with my better half in the car both wheels will light up like a posi. Its cuz the weight in the car is "about equal". Makes no sence as she is a good 90 pounds lighter then my 225lbs butt. However its more equal then no wieght in that side. The same with airbags, it plants the tire more firmly. Plant = traction. The trick is to tune the sides so they break at the same time for posi.
Now IF your rearend was about to go i would assume that it would make funky noises at speed. Snap, crackle and pop around corners and over all give ya a thump when ya goose it. Altho thats not the hard rule. I would not worry about it. Sounds normal to me

I wouldn't worry about it. Once i was riding in a friends Suburban when the rear end blew. EVERYTIME he turned, you would hear CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK and the truck would shake like a ****...wasn't pretty.
When I had a rear end break on me, riding on rail road tracks (NOT ON THE RAILS, the ties) was the first thing that came to mind.
