exhaust gaskets
exhaust gaskets
After putting in my new rebuilt engine. I find that i have a huge exhaust leak coming from the connection between the manifold and the y-pipe on both sides. I have been told that i have the wrong donut gaskets. Every part store ive been too has told me that they cant order the one i need, its not available to them to order. I went to a dealership, and they gave me the same one i have on there now. Does anyone know where i can get this? Or are they actually giving me the right part?
Thanks
Thanks
Funny, I visited my set of spare manifolds, from when I did my 2.8->3.4 swap.
I had also read Tom's post about his dougnuts and it's restrictiveness. When I examined my doughnuts in the manifolds, they fit in there perfect and NO restrictiveness notr sammler size.
I got mine from Pep Boys, they were less than $10. They have a sleeve that fits into the manifold part and then they are tapered, to have the pipe fit over the end, easy. I had NO TROUBLE OBTAINING MINE. I beleive they came from Fel Pro. BUT don't quote me. I do not have the paperwork handy right now.
I know you are in CT, what about Pep Boys? They should be there. HQ is in PA.
But, the right part is available. I once had the wrong ones on this car. Yep, trouble and cracked manifold, too. Keep searching, the right part, fits perfect and is leak free and (Tom) no downsizing.
Really.

You need to look at the inside of the donut, Karl. There's a ridge there; plain & simple. Remove the ridge and it helps. Unless you've got a "special california donut", every other one I've seen (my originals, my friend's camaro's originals, and two junkyard 2.8's) has had the ridge inside.
88Maro, how did you hook the y-pipe up? Did you hook it to the catalytic convertor, and then the engine? If so, the weight of the cat (and cat-back) might be pulling down on the y-pipe and preventing a good seal- the y-pipe would be tilted. You'd need a friend to push up on the back of the y-pipe while you tighten the manifold-to-y-pipe studs.
Either that, or, did you tighten each of the two studs on each side evenly? If not, you might have ****ed the flange to the side, and you could be getting a leak that way.

I went to Pep Boys and they said they didnt have it and they couldnt order it either. When i hooked up the y-pipe i held the back up with a jack so it didnt weigh it down. I also tightened the bolts evenly. but i wouldnt rule out either of those. Thanks for your help guys. I'll be visiting the junkyards tomorrow to see if i can find some there.
