I just bought a T-5.......wasn't planning to but....
I saw it at the boneyard and said "what the hell, i'll pull it out". Sort of an impusle buy. I guess i'll be doing the good ol' 700R4- T-5 swap eventually.....not soon though.
I couldn't get the goddamn flywheel off though.
Plus, somebody already snagged the slave cylinder and the pedals.
Guess i'll have to search for that stuff.
Does anyone know how long a Standard transmission actually lasts? I mean you hardly ever hear of one being rebuilt, unlike auto's which are rebuilt often. I got this one from a 85-87 Firebird. (It had MPFI but didn't have a serpintine belt, what years were these?)
Also, Graeme, exactly where was cutting required and what did you use to cut? Maybe i could take a look at your car since you've been through this. Are you having any problems?

Which one? The boneyard one or the one that's in my car? The boneyard one is probably gone. I swiched jobs and left it behind. It was in a million peices though, and i couldn't get it back together. Sorry... BTW, you planning on painting the Bird? Oh, and if you see and slave cylinders or clutch pedals at the yards let me know.
I also have a 700R4 for sale. $50 plus shipping. Worked well before the tranny swap now it is just sitting in my garage. info@myfirebird.com
I know that I am not supposed to post this stuff but I really need to get rid of this tranny, it weighs too much to just keep dolly-ing it around the garage.

My T-5's got 193k miles on it. Its getting slightly harder to shift into second but nothing that you cant live with. Personally, I think the thing is rock solid considering how much hell i put it through. You know, drag racing, road racing, powershifing, standstills... stuff like that. It also could be that my motor just doesnt have much power to break it anyway.

Cool, the donor car had 146,000 on it and it was a 1985 or 86 model. Fluid was clean. Hopefully i'll have no probs with it.

Rebuilding a T5 is not that big of a project to do yourself For someone who has done it before it should take at MOST 7-8 hrs and 200 for parts. It took me about 12-15 hrs but I had never even seen the inside of manual tranny before. Just grab an older Chiltons or GM Service book and go to it.

I agree about the ease of rebuild... it will cost a fortune at a good shop, but that's mostly lifting the engine, taking it out and sitting around whacking off expense... It should be relatively quick if you have it out and sittin' around... I would say 250k-300k for a reasonably well taken care of Tranny, possibly less if the little old lady that used it before knew nothing about how to shift. I don't know how well built the T-5 is though, but I've never had a tranny quit on me... speaking of manual cars with 117k, 213k and 315k on them. I would say the clutch should be installed new as those will last from 80k to 400k depending... I've got 140k on the bird and the tranny is smooth as silk with no play whatsoever.

The hardest thing was getting a correct clutch to work with my input shaft... (not a problem u will have ) i used a plasma cutter to cut the hole for the shifter.. and regular old drill bits for the master to go through the firewall.. the location on that is DIRECTLY under the brake booster

I think the reason that you don't hear of as many problems with standard tranny's is that the clutch isn't that hard to change out, and usually when an automatic goes out, it's the clutches that are slipping, right? That's why you here more about auto's, cuz they're a b*tch to replace.
