My car will turn over, but not fire. Is that the VATS by any chance? My mechanic says I have no spark, so he is changing out the VATS... or is he wasting his time?

He is wasting a lot of time and a lot of your $$$'s. It is very difficult to get to the VATs module. Stop him ASAP.

VATs won't affect spark, just the starter and the firing of the fuel injectors. May want to find a different mechanic.

Odds are it is first the ICM, second the pick up coil, third the ignition coil.

If he can't fix it, I'm not paying for it! I told him I am not paying him to learn how to fix cars on my dime...

But you also don't want the internals of your cars dash torn apart. The VATs module is located on the defroster duct, toward the front of the car between it and the firewall.

When I grabbed one from the JY I found a car with the windshield already removed and the dash pad gone. That made it much easier to get the VATs module out.
