deciding between buying back my 71 camaro buying my friends 89 or going with this fiero I saw that was for sale

Technically the Fiero has the same motor, but the 2 aren't really interchangeable due to the Fiero being mounted East-West. But it's still a 60 degree block, just like ours. I don't think the Fiero ever got the 3.1L, just the 2.8.

rx7speed,
I drove a 1985 4 cylinder Fiero for 3,000 miles in ten days, all thru central, Northern California.
When the Fireos first came out. Not a "current, used one".
I NEVER HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH A CAR IN MY LIFE!
I LOVED IT!!!
BUT Fieros have only 3 quarts of oil, due to pan design. That's why they got the rap of "buring up!"
All Fieros came with Iron Duke 4 cylinders & 2.8 6 cylinders. ALL.
You can slip a 3.4 under there, too.
That article is what I based my 3.4 swap information upon.
THAT SAID!!!!
Buy back your old Camaro. It's going up in value like nothing else. YOU WILL NOT GET THE "Milage" of the Fireo, but, big deal. The Fiero parts cost ya more & the Camaro parts cost less.
IF I WAS GIVEN THE CHANCE TO BUY BACK MY OLD FIRST CARS, I may have that option soon. A best buddys Brother in law is a Cop. I have proof I used to own certain 1966 Corvette & 1974 Corvette, back in the 70's. He's gonna check into the National Insurance Data Base to see if they exist, still.
ALWAYS BUY BACK YOUR FIRST OR PREVIOUS OWNED CARS.
2nd Gen Camaros are HOT RIGHT NOW
What model? Does 1971 have to comply with smog laws where ya are, still?????????
But, I do so love Fieros. Very fond memories of those 3,000 in CA.
PS, yes, you can EASILY drive 3,000 miles in ten days within CA borders. I live in LA. I went all the way from here to that town that just burnt up, big forest fire, Weaverville. Left to the coast (Eureka) & zig-zagged every direction in between! Got paid for doing this, too!!!

Well the Fiero has some SERIOUS advantages over the thirdgen V6 fbody. Most notably weight distribution. By design the fiero has all of its weight right over the wheels. From a dead stop a Fiero with ****ty tires will plant and beat just about any thirdgen thru a stoplight. Also the Fiero handles better with little or nothing changed in the suspension. The disadvantages of the fiero are pretty obvious, only two seats, they're typically older since they stopped building them in 88, and the interior is a little weird for short people like myself to operate.
Trending Topics
Have you guys spent ANY time at all around Fiero's? Seriously? True the 88's have an upgraded suspension and brakes, but to say they're the only one to buy is silly. As is comparing it to a chevette. Like it or not a Fiero handles curves as well or better than an FE2 thirdgen. Not to mention the Fiero doesn't have the problems we have with live axle hop. In the past two years one of my friends has had 7 different Fiero's, several of my other friends have Fiero's too. I take every chance I get to drive them, simply because they have their assets over thirdgens. Now I'm not saying that Fiero's are all around better than thirdgens and I'm not saying to sell your cars and run out and buy one, I'm just saying that people don't seem to know just what the hell they're talking about.

Who compared one to a chevette? I said where the front suspension came from, thats all.
I know what I'm talking about, a small, decently powered, nice handling, uhpolstered rollerskate.
Anyone want to know what Pontiac is to GM? It's the experimental division. Sure they have some standard models that are the same as other makes (like the F-body and the Silhouette, not every car has to be different, something has to make a profit). They use pontiac to release new concepts that may or may not flop. Any time something "different" than traditional is released they do it through Pontiac first (I can point out several examples, the "Widetrack Grand Prix" and the Fiero come to mind). Noticed they did not continue the Fiero past 88, ever wonder why? Design flaws and lawsuits. (They have been refered to as "Rolling fireballs")
Make you want to drive one whenever you can doesn't it?
hmm... funny, I've seen two burned fiero's EVER, both from faulty aftermarket stereo wiring, and about 25 burned thirdgens most stemming from engine fires. The Fiero was discontinued cause the average person doesn't want a two seat car, not to mention the competition it would have given to the fbody and ybody had they built the prototype that was scheduled for 89.

well I can handle the 2 seat thing I drive an rx7. as for repair cost I dont mind that either. again little import rx7 same thing if something breaks it is expensive. I found out though that my 71 camaro is now dismantled so I will not buy it back yet. need soemthing to drive while I get my rx7 motor rebuilt.
trying to hit 250-280 hp and 11k rpm. should be good for about 13 in the quarter.
but I dont know yet about the car I wasnt
I know a little about the camaoro but nothing about the fiero.
my only real problem with the camaro is everyone has one. I like to be a little different.
what problems are these fieros known for having? does anyone know were I can get some more info about them?
what is the best year for the 3rd gen camaro?if ppl can also please post some stats about these cars that would be helpfull

And I guess puting 3,000 miles on a new car in ten days doesn't qualify as gained knowledge and experience.
These cars were catching fire because of the LOW oil capacity and the average (DUH) owner. Once the oil went, the engine would overheat, poof!!
That happened alot.
They just didn't sell well.
I loved driving that car for my 3,000.
Ask the CHP guy that tailed me trying to get to San Francisco Airport to pick up my (then) fiance how well they handeled!
I didn't care if the front end came from a Chevette.
FYI Chevette designed by Opel of Germany. So was the suspension.
But of all the years, the 1988 was the best of the lot, suspension and engine management systems.
It was a poor mans Corvette.
Especially the 5-speed V-6 version!

well if the oil was the problem I have no problem with that
due to the 2 cycle nature of my RX7 I am used to checking the oil to make sure that there is enough in there

Well.. I'm going to go ahead and answer the topic question since noone else seems to have done so =P
Previously mentioned Fiero..
Chevrolet Citation (first car to have the 2.8) and Pontiac and Olds sister cars
Chevy Corsica and Beretta
Pontiac Gran Prix and Grand Am
Buick Regal
Chevy S-10 pickup, possibly S-10 blazer
I know there's more, the 60* V6 became pretty popular with GM designers.. but I can't think of alot of them. Those are the ones I've seen with my own eyes. Btw, I have to note the 2.8/5 spd Getrag combo in a Corsica can really propell that 2800 lb grocery-getter quite well
Another note, the F-bodies and S-10 are the only ones I know of that are front-engine RWD.. all others are transverse-mounted FF or MR (fiero only)
Another note on the Fieros. Fieros are notorious for having SILLY amounts of aftermarket parts available. One easy way to get around the problem with the oil pan: get one of the SBC kits and drop a 305 in there. It'll have a nice big oil pan.
(I say a 305 cuz that weird little mid-engined beast seriously doesn't need more displacement than that.. I think it'd be suicide to go bigger and run it around town)
------------------
'86 Camaro SC, black /w silver racing stripes
2.8l MPFI/700r4 /w special 2nd gear delete option
In search of new v8 engine & transmission, now contemplating t5 swap to get me out of this mess.
Misc Mods: Cut air box, '83 Firebird spoiler.
Performance Parts: MSD coil, Accel 8mm wires, SplitFire plugs, Gabriel hijackers.
Audio Mods: Pioneer DEH-P3000, two 12" Optimus Pro Audio subs in hand-made enclosure each powered by a 260 watt Optimus amp. Working on shaving the box for weight.
My Homepage, with pics.

Any motor in a S-10 truck also came in the S-10 Blazers. Including the 4.3 (after 1987 or 88?-not sure of the cut off year) & the Iron Duke 4 cylinder versions.
I have a 2.8 in my 1985 Blazer.
Citation, Phoenix, Buick had a version of the 60* V-6 & so did Olds.
Lets not forget Caddy! They had a variation on the Citation, the Cimmaron!
BUT WATCH OUT. Many of the Olds & Buicks went to a weird sized V-6 (like a 3.0-parts DO NOT interchange, AT ALL!!!).
BUT
ONLY S-10 Blazers up to late 80's & Firebirds/Camaros used the North/South V-6.
If ya gonna drop in a 305 (into a Fiero), it's just as easy to find a cheap 350 engine to do the job, too!
Out buddy was referring to a Fiero in the first line of his thread.

Variations of the 2.8 were used in virtually every car GM offered in the 80's and early 90's. Cavaliers, Celebritys, Citations, Luminas, Lumina Minivans, Grand Prix's, Pontiac 6000's, etc etc etc. If its a V6 and you pop the hood to find an engine that looks like a chopped 350 its a 4.3, otherwise its most likely a variant of the 2.8. The only exceptions are the 3.8 and the 3.3 which is basically a sawed off 3.8.

to be honest I doubt I would be going above a v6
I like having a smaller motor and being an underdog
i lose in a race whats the guy have to gain now if I win in the race whats he have to lose
so I am prolly going to stay with the V6 with the fiero just pop a 3.4 in there.

I did find a way to do the 3.4 swap into Fireo's. That article was the foundation for my doing my 3.4 swap.
I wish I could find it easy, but, it'll take some searching from me.
BUt, if ya get agreat running Fiero, leave it & enjoy it!! I loved mine I drove for 3,000 miles!!

I caught this post way late...lemme get to a few random comments
First, I love Fieros too. When my parents bought my '89, they were contemplating buying a then-new, leftover '88 Fiero GT in bright red instead. If they had, I wouldn't be on this board right now, because that would be my car instead
Anyways, it is true that finally in '88, they got the car right. They made a true sports suspension, with the enthusiast in mind.
But does that make previous ones BAD?? Hell no. Just not as razor-sharp. Previous ones did have T-car (Chevette) front suspension, as well as X-car (Citation, etc.) rear suspension, and X-car engines and gearboxes. However, the overall experience in a Fiero is more than the sum of its parts. These cars are FUN...I have driven an '84 SE 5 speed, and an '88 GT. Both cars were a blast...that little '84 didn't feel like it was put together with X and T body parts in the least
Finally, the 60 degree V6 has been used in (going in order):
-X car ('80-'85Citation, Omega, Skylark, Phoenix)
-A car ('82-'90 Celebrity, 6000, some Cutlass Cieras)
-J car ('82-'94 Cavalier, Sunbird, Cimarron, Firenza)
-F car ('82-'92 Camaro, Firebird)
-Whatever the hell the Fiero was called, '84-'88
-W car ('88-'93 Grand Prix, Cutlass Supreme, Regal, Lumina)
-N special ('88-'93 Beretta, Corsica)
-S10 Trucks and Blazers, '84-'93
Hope this list helps...hell, some of you have probably never heard of some of these cars!!
BTW, for those who may try to argue, I listed cars in which our engines have much in common. I left out all '94-up 3100 FWD V6s, which use aside from aluminum heads, SFI injection, not a 2bbl carb or MPFI

-LT1, M6, t-tops, 45k miles
