Car backfires between 1000-2000rpm...

Well, I am at university, now, and last weekend I went home, and started up the old Firebird. So I thought I'd take it for a quick run down the Driveway, and around the yard...well whenever I tried backing up it was backfirin-hesitating, and did this constantly between 1000-2000, so I tok it for a drive and it had no power.

I was wondering what could have happened in the time it sat...where would you guys start...

I am thinking about checking the timing, and reseting the idle...

Ummm I don;t know about that, I put some of that gas treatment in it... like the stuff you use if your going to let gas sit for a couple months...

But, I put some new gas in and take it for a quick run...

Thanx

it sounds like you are running way to rich. Check out the ingition components: spark plugs, wires, coil, distirbutor and rotor. Look for some corrosion on the terminals and sand it off if you see some.

How long did it sit? When I totalled my car, it sat for 1.5 months before I fixed it. It sat with a 1/4 tank of gas... when it was back together, the thing wouldn't start. I nearly freaked; I thought I botched the wiring harness. My dad suggested the gas might be bad; sure enough, after a few gas cans full of '93, the car started right up.

Well, I am going home again this weekend, so I asked my father to pick up some gas for me... and he said sure, I just need the car to run well, I have to see it *sigh* and no one will pay for a car that hesitates and backfires... So after the weekend I see if that fixes it, thnx for the help guys...

edit(Car has been setting for about a month now only started twice...I miss her)
