oxygen sensor gone bad?
i have a friend with a '89 Firebird with the 2.8l. ECM is flashing a code 44, and everytime it comes on, car runs really rough with low pick up. Im thinking that his oxygen sensor is going bad cause the idle srops and rises frequently, and maybe his tranny is starting to slip and not go into gear. Anyways it vibrates over 55. Any costs of trannys and is it hard to change the sensors??

oxygen sensors never got bad, they only get dirty, this is info is straight from a science teacher at UT who is a car nut. he said just remove your air cleaner and go run it hard on the eway and get it hot, or drive around in second gear. they can get dirty but all you gotta do is get it hot and it will clean it off.
this is why they put it as far up on the pipe as they can, on a v engine right where the y connects and on a straight, up near the head, so it stay hot all the time and works the best.
also, you can add a second on near it, or just patch into it. hook up a volt meter too it and watch the air fule ratio your self, or use it too tune the car, i got he chart somewhere but onthe volt meter you want to be in betwen 250-800. lower being lean.

Alright, ill tell him to give it a shot. Im just trying to save him some money right now. Pep-Boys wanted 65 dollars just to hook it up to their computer, so i thought the jumper wire was a little cheaper. But still i believe it needs a new tranny too.

The oxigen sensor is easy to remove and inexpensive,if the engine has done more than 100000miles,change it!
