I need you opinion guys, It is about a TPI car but not technical, and i feel like i know you fellow V6r's better than anyone on this site. I found a 1986 Trans am for sale in a nearby suburb. It is blue with gray interior. This car is like brand new. Not a flaw anywhere, and get this, only 29,000 miles. The guy is asking 8200 OBO. But i am interested to hear your opinions on the price. This car would be my everyday driver, do you think it would be foolish to buy a car that has been stored all of its life, and then start to drive it everyday, i have no indoor storage so it would sit out everyday. I just need some advice i guess. I was going to buy a new truck until i saw this baby pop up. Oh yeah, the original owner is 68 years old. SO i don't think it has been beat on. He even still has the window sticker. I did have a thought about 86 not having TPI? Maybe i am wrong?

Oh yeah, i do have a V6 tech question. Does anyone know of any harm that can come by taking off you exhaust shield. No matter what i do it ends up rattling!! If i dont need it, it is coming off.

thanks guys

I dont think that is a bad price at all. A red IROC conv sold for $11k down here not too long ago. I asked the guy how much it was cause I was wanting to test drive it so I had to act like I wanted it. Anyways he said 11k firm. I literally laughed in his face and left. Only to see a guy I know (not well) driving it. He paid that too. I wanted to smack him. And it had 56k miles.

I know that car!Does the owner have gray hair?If so I raced him a while back.HAHA!Just messing with ya.I feel the price is fair.Seeing it's 15 years old and has low mileage. They do have TPI in 86.85 as well.
Why do you want an F-body?I'm guessing to drive and look cool. Am I close? So buying a car that has done more sitting in the last 15 years then driving isn't foolish.

As for your shield, try to keep it!If possible.

One last thing, you might want to have the shocks and undercarriage checked out! This guy was 50 or 51 when he bought the sports car. Most of the miles he raked up was probably from cruising the parking lot at the local old folks home trying to pick up chicks. You know those speed bumps can be hell

'86 did have TPI, so that's alright. You're basically getting a new car; and I'd spend $8.2k for a cherry condition '86 T/a than spend the same for a 4th gen -any- day.

I'm sorry but 8500 for a "stock" car that is over 10 years old, and in not to high a demand is WAYYYYYY too much. Even with the low miles it would not be worth it to me. You would be looking at replacing all the engine seals within the year because are all dried out from lack of oil. Theres some dimwits tring to sell pink(yes bright pink) 85 Z for 8500 here and it is the uglist thing I have ever seen. All I can say about it is it has a decent sterio system(3-4) year old competition stuff and has 75k miles. I went to look at it and they said they have been tring for 3 years now to sell it so it has not been moved in at least that long. I went looked at the car about gagged from the color, looked ok otherwise asked the price and left laughing at them mumbling no wonder you've had it for 3 years!. They also have a 67 rag top that they want 25k for and its not original but in decent shape. I laughed at that too.

It comes down to what the car means to you. If you LOVE that car then I would jump on it cause there isn't many "new" 15 year old cars around.

Thanks guys, i am kinda torn about what to do. The car would mean a lot to me. My 91 is the center of my world(aside from my gf of course ) These cars have been a passion of mine growing up. My dad always had one when i was little. He would always buy one in need of some TLC, and we would nurse her back to health. I guess he planted the seed that turned into a full blown love for these cars. I guess i am little worried about the fact that the engine seals could be shot. I will go take a better look this weekend and take some pictures for you guys. Thanks for all the info. By the way, i am still after the all so elusive 91 trans am front bumper cover. If anyone can hook me up let me know. My 91 is dying for fresh paint. I had one i bought on ebay, but both parties decided to end the transaction. The bumper was damaged beyond repair. thanks again

Here is what I think. Unless you plan on buying the car and letting it sit only to collect in money and maybe later on sell it as a classic. I would take that money and buy a GOOD condition Camaro or Firebird (which ever one you want) and mod the **** out of it. I personally wouldn't buy a third gen for over $6k unless it is a 1992 Z28 with the works. But do what you want. Key hint, use your money wisely.

My opinon is the Price is too steep. Now if it was an 87 GTA then it would be worth it, but there is nothing special about an 86 Trans Am. Its not fast and it olny has a 305.
Oh and by the way a 350TPI was not available in Trans Ams till 87. Very few... like 50 or 60 85 Z/28's got 350's.
It comes down to how much it is worth to you. If its worth that much go ahead. If not Don't. The only way that car will hold its value is if you buy it and let it set also.

Past Thirdgen:
86 Trans Am w/ built 355TPI with SLP goodies and too much other stuff to List. One sweet *** car, wish I would have had a good enough Job to pay insurance on three cars so I could keep it, but for a 89 Turbo Trans Am w/ Low miles, I think I made the right choice!

LOL I know a guy selling a 93-4 vette for 8500!. Great condition, he just buys them for 8k rides 'em for about 9months to a year then sells them to buy another one. Solid car, engine things been babied. Runs mid 13's at the track the 3 times he taken it there.
