eratic idle
Hey guyz!!!
Just curious if anybody else has this problem and if anybody knows how 2 correct it? I know that there could be lots of reasons....but any advice would be areciated. When I first start my car in the morning my rpm's jump up, and then they go way down, and then jump back up.....etc. But when my car gets warmed up, this problem is no longer noticable. Thanks in advance for any help.......Jeff

I think that's normal. My car does it and I think it only does it to warm the car up a little quicker. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

I beleive that would be fast idle. On cold mornings it will rev up a little higher to get warmed up.
Just to make sure, when it is reving high, give it a good shot of gas, and if it Idles way down after that, its just a Fast idle for the cold...

Mine does that too when I crank it up in the mornings for school. After I go down the street to pick up my friend and leave my neighborhood it stops. It also stops if I just press the gas a few times when in Park. I thought something was wrong with my car lol.

Do the basics, check your (IAC) Idle air control and do a tune up (can't hurt) like check your timing.

It could just be the evap can purging. You might want to check the purge valve. One thing a lot of pepole forget is the filter on the bottom of the evap. can. Check it, if it's dirty replace. It wont hurt and will just ensure tha it is working fine.

Heh, my car did the same thing this morning. It started normally, then the RPM's dropped, it almost stalled, then it rev'd back up again... did it 3 times, then stabled out. If it does it again, I'll have to check things out this weekend...

Alright guyz, thanks for the help!!!
I'm getting a new cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, evap. can filter, fuel filter, adjusting tps and iac, new o2 sensor, and baro sensor. I figure that i haven't changed these for a while, so i'm probably due anyways. Plus I need 2 get my car smogged real soon, so I may as well get it ready for that. I'm gonna change each of these components one at a time, and start my car inbetween. I'll let ya know what the problems was (if I fix it).

Have you check your EGR valve? If you have the 2.8L your in luck and you can accualy test it. The 3.1L use a digital EGR valve and none of the repair manuals tell you how to check them.
All though if it is trying to die before it is warmed up you might want to check the IAC,fuel filter, air filter. I have accualy had a dirty air filter keep the car from idling. The car was fight so much to get air it could barly run. If all the usale suppects check out ok try droping some fuel injector cleaner in the tank.

My EGR's blocked off right now; the thing must be rusty inside- it would engage, and then it wouldn't disengage. (Then the car would stall, wouldn't start, etc...) So I blocked off the vacuum line with an old golf tee; I really gotta replace that valve soon (before January inspection!)
