You do if you want to pass emissions.

I thought the SMOG pump was a California emmissions thing. If you don't live there I would take it off. Heck if you fail emissions it's not so hard to put it back on.

I would leave it on...the HP loss from a smog pump or leaving a cat intact vs gutting it is so minimal, it isn't worth the effort. I always think its funny when someone guts a cat...it's been shown to add 1-2 HP on a 350, so I can't imagine a V6 will see any benefit. As for the smog pump, if it works fine I would leave it be.

My '86 2.8 with automatic didn't get a smog pump, so why should an '86 2.8 with a manual trans? It makes no sense to me. If you've got no visual inspection, the 2.8 should be able to pass the sniffer (at idle) with the pump gone.

I don't understand AIR pumps in general, either. Okay, so you've got these emissions in the tailpipe, say. Say, out of 100% exhaust gases, you've got, 10% CO, 10% HC, 10% NOx. Now, lets shove fresh air into the exhaust (with an AIR pump)! That turns the gas amount in your tailpipe into 110% (100% original gas, 10% oxygen). That new "110%" becomes 100% for the smog readings, which turns all those 10%'s (of CO/HC/NOx) into 9.09% of CO, 9.09% of HC, 9.09% of NOx. The fresh air dilutes the exhaust. They might as well hold the exhaust probe "near" the exit of the tailpipe.

first i could give a **** about emissions, hehehhe, here in ohio we can do what ever we want.

i have already removed the cat. last year and it did help, also gave it some more sound, i just cut it out and put a piece of pipe in its place.

but it would make sence to remove that darn thing, it dont do nothing very important, and i think when its cold out it sticks at startup, cause i allways thought i was my alt. belt never getting tight enough, but then i noticed the smog pump, and i know it could be doing that.

and it is the perferct spot to hook up a second alt.

i do feel sorry for those that must apply to emissions crap, but just a tip for you, i know there is a bottle of stuff you can run in your gas, that will make any car pass the test, seen it on tv.

Tom, I believe the purpose of the AIR pump is to introduce fresh air that provides additional oxygen to aid the reaction that happends in the catalytic convertor. There is a dilution effect, but I think it goes further than that.

It's been a while since first year chemistry though, I might be wrong

now it was not a tv commercial show selling that stuff, it was a real car show, might
of been crank n chrome before they changed names, but they did there own test and
it worked, not an infomercial.
think the people that make 104+ octane boost made it.

AlexJH is right the AIR pump only pumps air into the cat or exhuast apsage when it needs it in oder to help the cat function propley befoire it reaches operating temp and other conditions. When it's not needed it will divert the air either into the intake or on some cars into a silencer.

With a computer controlled car you want to leave the EGR and other smog stuff on. If it is not there the computer will still compensate as if it were there and would accualy lower your HP out put. Pepole used to say that removing it help HP becuase they had none computer controlled and did help, but not the computer controlled stuf.
