Do you have a automatic or manual transmission?

I have found the bolts holding the converter to the flywheel loose before and had the same symptoms.

Just a thought.

its an auto tranny. if it was loose bolts, would that cause permanent damage if i was too lazy to take out the tranny to tighten them?

I did not have to take the transmission out of the car.

I jacked it up and removed the inspection plate and tightened one bolt at a time, turning the flywheel as I needed.
