Car Stopped Working...cant find why
Ok, i was driving home from work when the car just stalled. I was able to start it again twice, but it died 10 secs after each time when i let off the throttle. i got it to my house via tow truck (thank *** for triple a) and looked it over. i changed the fuel filter hoping it was clogged, still wont start. fuel pump seems to prime (makes the usual noise when ignition is turned on) but the car just cranks and cranks, it wont turn over.....idk what is goin on??? any suggestions?
btw, its a fuel injected 2.8 w. approx 75k on it

It doesn't crank slow, right?
Check fuel pressure and check for spark. It's usually 1 of the 2. Fuel pressure should be at 42-45 psi.
EDIT: Do you still have the old fuel filter? If you do, clean the end off and try to blow through it. If you get alot of resistance then it was clogged up. Clogged up filters make a fuel pump work VERY hard....up until it dies.

Agreed; buy/rent/steal a fuel pressure gauge; they're only $40, and they'll tell you everything.

I'd check for spark first. If your getting spark turn the car off and then turn it back on (but don't start it). If you dont hear the pump buzz or whine, you could be in need of a new relay or fuel pump. To determine which one swap the fuel pump relay connection with the cooling fan connection. If the pump buzzes and the car starts, get a new relay. If not its pump pulling time

Not necessarily- the fuel send hose could be clogged, the fuel pressure regulator could be shot, etc. Like I said, a fuel pressure gauge will tell you everthing. Imagine replacing a pump and your car still won't start!

One other thing you may want to check... the bulkhead connection next to the radiator by the battery. Mine got corroded from battery acid and the battery would go dead. the alternator was good but its output wasn't getting back to the battery. Also there were times the car would crank but no-go. but when that happened the fuel pump would not whine and the check engine light would stay off even with the ignition in the on postition.

i had the same problem with my car ('87 berlinetta 2.8mfi ) Turns out it was fouled spark plugs. i put new ones in and she starts fine now, or it did til i blew the engine...i would guess it's some kind of ignition problem if the fuel pump and pressure is ok, maybe check the spark plugs and distributor cap

CHECK YOUR SPARK FIRST before you go buying a bunch of tools and guages.
It could be something as simple as your coil.
Also check your cap and rotor button in the distributor I have seen where a hole will wear right through a rotor button.
After you check for spark let us know what you found.

Spark, use paper clip to see spark. Pull plug wire insert clip, turn over.
IF NOT WHITE LIGHTENING BRIGHT spark, it's your coil.
If no spark, ignition modular.
IF you have "fuel" pressure & hear pump, it's your pump. That's a two man job. Just did mine about 10 days ago. On a lift.
My pump went, barely started car, then no start at all.
When I checked pressure, I had gas.
When I used gauge, I had 10 lbs.
Milage, varies.
USE ALL NEW AC DELCO STUFF
Pump, stabilizer, filter, sock. You've got to.
Previous owner cheated. I saw the second fuel pump in that car. I've installed third. At 110,000 miles, the correct way. I expect 100,000 miles from my job.
