Carb doesn't like it's rebuild
Carb doesn't like it's rebuild
I just rebuilt the carb (Rochester E2SE) on my '83 2.8L V6 Camaro, and am having a few problems. The car ran pretty well before the rebuild (I was trying to get rid of a hesitation problem with the rebuild). Now it runs okay hot, but when it's cold, it's awful. The choke works fine, the linkages are clear, and all vacuums appear good. But the car idles too high when hot, even with the idle adjustment screw all the way out. It stalls out when cold, and hesitates when cold. The exhaust smells stronger than before, although not a strong smell of gas (not sulfury at all either).
I'm thinking it is likely the idle mixture screw (which has been moved), and have read that a dwell test is the way to adjust it. My questions:
1)Does this make sense? Is the idle mixture a reasonable candidate for the problem? Is a dwell test really the best way to adjust it?
2) My dwell meter is for an 8 cylinder, but usable with an 4 by doubling the numbers. Can I multiply by one and a half to get a 6 cylinder setting?
I've been working on this carb for about a month now, and have learned a lot, but obviously, still have a way to go! Thanks.

Those computer controlled carbs have a mixture control solenoid, you measure the dwell at a green(?) wire that has a connector that doesn't plug into anything. I can't remember how to adjust it though.
Are there any adjustement screws on the choke/high idle linkages.
Maybe get this posted in the carb section, might get more ideas.

Thanks. There is a screw on the high idle, but when I have the high rpm issue at idle, the screw is completely off the cam. I'm going to work on the problem today, and if I have no success, I'll post again- this time in the carb section!

I moved your post to the V6 forum because there aren't many people knowledgeable about V6 carbs on the Carburetor forum. I think you'll do better here.
Re: Carb doesn't like it's rebuild
Thanks. The vacuums all seem good. I worked on it some more, and it's running pretty good, but the exhaust definitely has a strong odor (a buddy said it smelled like gas). It turns out, acccording to Chilton's, that the dwell on this carb is not adjustable, so I have to find a different way to fine tune the rich/lean mixture. I turned the idle mixture screw almost all the the way in (until it stalled), and the exhaust still smelled stongly like gas. Any suggestions on what to do next, as I'm pretty sure it's running too rich still.

Thanks. I've seen nothing about internal leaks and I've looked pretty hard over the last month. I noticed that when I close the choke at idle the car revs up noticeably. I understand why this happens with a lean mixture, but if the mixture is too rich, would this still happen? I'm wondering if I'm right on it being too rich..... Also, is there something else that would cause the exhaust to smell strongly? My buddy said it was gas, but I thought it smelled more like just really dirty exhaust.
