Well guys its been interesting, but I'm afraid I've joined the dark side
Probably still gonna hang around here and there, but after getting a 96 5 spd with a 3.8, I am realizing just how much the 4th gen improved over the 3rd, never really realized how far apart they were till getting one. It sits lower, the nose is extremely low thanks to the help of a canted radiator(something I first saw this on corvettes, and did not realize carried over to the F-bodies), the engine sits quite far back, the chassis is much more rigid, much of the body is plastic or SMC(Not sure exactly what the stuff is, but it's extremely light), Pretty sure the track is wider and that it will take bigger rims, the front suspension design is better, the steering isn't numb thanks to rack and pinion, etc, etc.
Just seems like GM put a lot more thought into performance, almost as much as they do into the vettes it seems like, the car is much quicker, and takes high speed corners extremely smooth.
Bottom line is my 4th gen feels like a better car in every aspect, and unlike my 3rd gen I can get in it and drive it with relatively little drama, and because of that I find myself disinterested in troubling myself to continue with the 3rd gen.
I'll be putting my car in the for sale section, either parting out or selling outright, I have the title, at current it does start, but requires giving gas to do so, and will hold idle till you try to move it, at which point it will tend to stall out, I suspect the IAC hose I have on it atm is too kinked(but there is a good chance there is more to it than that), and that the idle speed needs brought up, interior is gutted atm, and it needs a driver side floorpan, as well as a paint job, I will include more details of mods/replaced parts and what it still needs in the ad I post, car is in pittsburgh, pa.
And I'm not bashing the 3rd gen by any means here, I definitely like my 3rd gen too, but atm money is tight, and I have to pick which I want more, otherwise neither one of them will make much if any progress towards being the car I want. The 3rd gen is easier to get in and out of, and has more of a muscle car feel to it, and t-tops and is nice to just cruise around in, while the 4th gen feels like a sports car, and drives more like one. Oh and I LOVE the body style of thirdgens, the 4th gen is growing on me, but I still like the 3rd gen better from an appearance stand point. Interestingly the IROC-Z rims actually look really good on a early 4th gen, better than the aftermarkets mine has(which don't look bad, better than stock 4th gen at any rate)(I had a tire go flat on the 96 and borrowed a wheel/tire from my 85)

Hmm, well like I said, I truely do love both, but I am too poor to have two such cars, and I just know that if I try to make them both nice, it will pull me and probably both the cars down, so I am prioritizing the one that I enjoy more. Hopefully I can sell the 85 to a good home, recoup some of the money I have into it, and put it towards making the 96 nicer.

I thought you were going over to a mustang or something when you said dark side.
Enjoy the 4th gen. Its still a F-body, and a good one at that.

At any rate, the fbodies offer good performance for a low price, and there are only a handful of imports I'm interested in, and they are still out of my price range, plus if I get something any better than this car it will be a vette, or a v8 fbody most likely.

Yea my buddy has a 2000 camaro and really it is a sweet ride. Its got the same 3.8L in it and it surprised me the first time I rode in it. High 15's at the local race track and its all stock.
Have fun with the new ride!

4th gen is not that dark. I used to have a 1st gen and stupidly sold it. If I had the money I'd have one again. Or a Corvette or WRX etc. etc. But the 3rd gen is what I've got so that's what I'm sticking with. Plus it's satisfying to beat faster, newer sportier cars with a bone stock v6! Can't wait to replace the original shocks, struts etc. etc.
I've also got a 3.4 block to play with so let us know what parts you have when you pull the trigger.

Trigger is already pulled, lol-every time I romp on that 3.8 I get a pretty big dumb grin on my face, lol-I too was surprised how quick it is, but then it has as much power as most of the 3rd gen v8s did, mighty 350 tpi withstanding
I have a list of my mods here:

I have been thinking of LsX swapping my 5.0 ... F-Body isn't the dark side at all.

Do what makes ya happy. I think the one car plan makes more sense than trying to mod two.
Honestly though, I borrowed a buddy's '95 Camaro and was underwhelmed. I thought the turning radius was crap, numb steering, and a bit more body roll. It also felt heavier, and I didn't like how the engine was under the cowl. Good for handling, bad for working on.... Yes, it was faster, the seats are nice, and the stock sound system is better, but... I'll be here.
