Question about a 1992 RS
Question about a 1992 RS
I recently bought a 1992 Camaro RS with a V6 engine in it. It is an automatic transmission (which is my first automatic) and as stupid as this may sound I do not understand the shifter. The shift has what appears to be a 1st and 2nd gear (which I imagine I use when going up hills) and the shifter have the "D" for drive, but then it has a peculiar "D" in a box, followed of course by Neutral and Park.
My question is, what is gear is that? And when is it proper to be in that gear? I should not have strayed from stick shift, but this is the 25th anniversary Camaro, with T tops no less, I could not pass it up. Now I am just trying to figure the car out.
Also is the "Service Engine" light the new "Check Engine" light like in my 83'? Or are does the 92' also have a check engine?
To bad these old cars don't often come with a owners manual.
Thanks in advance.

take your car to auto zone or advance auto parts they can reset your code,or tell you what code it is showing at no charge.

Re: Question about a 1992 RS
When you do turn on the ignition, the service engine soon, or "SES" light as it is often called should do a bulb check. In the run position with the engine off, then when you turn the engine on, it should go off. It should only stay lit when the computer currently sees that there is a problem. Codes that were pertinent, but aren't currently will be stored in the computers memory. There is an article on here about how to read codes, and when i find it i'l post a link to it. If i remember correctly, if you disconnect the battery for more than 30 seconds, the computer will clear all the codes from its memory.
But to answer your questions: the check engine light is the same as the SES light.
The boxed D position is overdrive, it is used for general driving and allows the transmission to shift into its highest gear, a .7 to one ratio. The regular D doesn't allow the transmission to shift in overdrive, and is used it in situations where your transmission cant make its mind up about what gear it wants to be in.
