Timing Screwup??!!Help

Hey All,

Was just wondering if someone could help me out real quick,

so yesterday I attempted my first timing adjustment at school and I was doing it alone, so everything seemed to be good at first but I guess I had loosened the hold down clamp way too much as oil started leaking out, and when I seemed to just have it perfect at 10BTDC I let go of the dis. to check the mark with the gun, and it just all of a sudden started running like crap and the timing jumped all the way to the 3:00 position on the right side of the marks, and I can't get the timing to zero btdc (close though) without the wires on the module hitting the back of the intake

I had to leave it yesterday (ran out of time at school) but WTF happened??

Do you think that because it was so loose it jumped or something??

It was still running and adjustable, just not in the right range

Rotor?? The cap and rotor are new though, and it was still running and starts right up..Have searched and searched and can't find any threads with (timing gone wrong issues) lol

Please let me know what you guys think

Re: Timing Screwup??!!Help

more then likley u had the clamp completly off and the distributor jumped up and skipped a tooth.

u will need to put the motor to tdc on #1 cyl and remove the dizzy and reinstall it with the rotor pointing at the number 1 spark plug tower on the cap. then from there restet the timing

also be very carefull that the oil pump driveshaft didnt come out. The distributor drive also drives the oil pump drive shaft, though the distributor will not sit all the way down unless the oil pump driveshaft is engaged completly into the bottom of the dizzy so u choulsnt have anything to worry about

when u set the timming only lossen the bolt/clamp eough that u can turn the dizzy by hand with a lil force, this stops it from turbning freely so it cant move on its own when checking the timming with the timming light

Re: Timing Screwup??!!Help

Did ya fix it? make sure that oil pump arm is down there though! Im sure your dizzy just jumped out since it wasnt tightned down, my trick is to put the 90* bend extention, another 6'' extention, and socket on the hold down bolt and tighten/losen it just enough to turn it, leave the socket.extention or what ever in it, then set the timing and tighten down the hold down bolt then, go back and use the light again to prove that it is still at the degrees you wanted(just in case you moved it while tightening down the hold down bolt)

Yup fixed it

Thanks you guys

So what happened is just what you guys said it was off like two teeth, so then I set it back to tdc then pulled it out and pointed it right after #1 on the dizzy cap, but I had found tdc on the exhaust stroke on accident the first time lol

had to pull it out again and turn it 180 and it was good, then adjusted it back to 10btdc, it took a couple of checks and re-adjustments the damn thing kept moving to 12

So got it right, the cars def. starting to come along, runs much better now

glad I didn't mess anything up too bad lol

Preciate all the help
