3.1 into 5.0body no speedo

My bird died!Rearended! So I've transplanted almost every part into a 305tbi body.the wireing harness in the dash is the one that was in the car when I got it.I've searched for pin info on the 2 without any luck.I've started stripping the tape off the harness that came out off the 90 v6 firebird.I'm going to find out where all the wires going to the gauge cluster pin into the pigtail on the gauge side.I've got to find out where the gauge side pigtail wires in the 305camaro are going so I can get my speedo and tach working.OH,I've tryed 3 different clusters and another vss on the tailshaft.I still gota look to make sure this camaro has the vss box under the dash.any help would be apresheated

Wiring should be the same, is the vss on the trans wired in reverse? Wires broken? Iirc the wire to the gauge is green and the wires from the trans are yellow/purple. Trace wires from the trans to the buffer box at the computer, and there to the gauge. They should. Be tied to.the computer too. I have not deolved into a fi harness, but this is how my carbed car was.

What year camaro?

Re: 3.1 into 5.0body no speedo

both a 90 modles.the v6 was a bird and the v8 was a 5.0tbi.which one is the vss buffer box.Is it about 2 and a half buy 1 and a half buy 2 and a half? The wires cant get switched, the conectors wont let them. The tac is peged out and the speedo lays dead.I moved the engine with harness including the tranny part, the tranny never seperated them.tranny lines, radiator ,fan, ecm, canisters driveshaft rearend gastank and got everything running great, all gauges but the tach and speedo!I still gota know what the pulse thing for the tach looks like and where to find it.from what I've heard it should run slow not peg out.I checked out that austinthirdgen sight about it and the way the talk there are different setups.I'm going over my bird harness and going to compair that to the tbi one.

Well, the tach in the Camaro dash isn't going to work right because it's for a V8.

Swap the ENTIRE wiring harness for the dash and engine out of the Bird. VSS problem solved. Everything else just plugs in. You may need to swap the instrument cluster connectors over (not entirely sure if the Camaro uses the same connectors or pinout). The speedo is electric, not cable (unless someone did something backwards and put a cable speedo in the dash). And you'll probably need to swap over your VATS box unless you have the proper key for the Camaro steering column and VATS module.

The TBI wire harness uses an external buffer for the VSS. The Bird harness uses the ECM as the buffer. The wire coming out of the ECM goes into the 15 pin connector next to it and is GRAY. There is also a RED one for cruise control. However, the speedo may or may not work. I know that the VSS output from the ECM in my 91 harness would NOT run my speedo in my 87 dash harness when connected directly, so I had to continue to run the VSS buffer anyways, connecting the VSS wires BACKWARDS (purple to yellow and yellow to purple) to get the buffer to stop complaining (you need to patch the buffer wires into the ECM wires WITHOUT cutting the ECM wires because this will mess with the ECM and set a code 24). And, IF the Camaro has a buffer box, it will be on the ECM bracket and is bright yellow, and the output wire from the box to the instrument cluster is, as was said above, green with a black stripe.

:edit: Ask around in the Electronics boards for the pinout for the instrument cluster, the C100, C207, C208, and the VSS buffer box. Also, you MAY be able to get away with swapping out the boards in the instrument cluster for the tach in both clusters.
