oil pressure gauge not working

back in june i took my car to a carshow right after i swapped in a new engine, well in the process i forgot to bolt down the little tap the keeps the wires from the manifolds, well while driving to the show i noticed my gauge started bouncing all around and wouldnt stop, well on the way home it finally pegged itself so i thought the oil pressure unit went bad, well i got home and changed it and got no difference, so i took it back out and got a new one and still no change, well i looked and noticed the wires against my manifold so i thought the wires were damaged, but when i pulled off the loom the wires werent damaged at all so what could be causing my gauge to not work? i really want to get this fixed. help please!!!

extreme heat may short out a wire without any sign on of melting on the outside coating i would do a resistance check on the wire itself before you go throwing parts at it. electrical systems can be really touchy,

Check all the wireing up to the sensor itself, i cant remember if the oil sensor uses low or high resistance for a high oil pres. reading. But ohm out the wires and see if theres (OL ohms/infinity). That could def. be the prolem your seeing.
Have you ever taken out the guage cluster???

Not sense I put it in, when I bought the car it didn't have a cluster so I bought one for it off a member here, it worked fine for 3 years, it was just after it got against the manifold

Well i would really suspect that cable(wire). If you got a ohm meter of some sort, trace the wire and see if it has resistance through out the whole wire, if not then your wire is split of broken somewhere. For just checking the wire itself you will want low ohms(make sure the wire is not connected to any device).... ( .1-5ohms is good) Too many ohms is bad and if its got a crack in it, it will read (infinity) or OL on the meter.
