Engine Lethargic, 250 rpm idle, Backfires when revved

86 2.8. The tach says it idles at 250 rpm and even if it isn't accurate, the idle is extremely low when it does idle. It revs incredibly slowly, and when I let off the gas it backfires so loud I think my ears will start to bleed. I had a code 42, but I checked the connector on the brown wire on the passenger side firewall and it went away. Occasionally, their is and extra bang in-between the lopes... I hope that last one makes sense. I am at a loss, the timing hasn't been touched since it ran correctly and I just set the fuel pressure. Any ideas?

Out the exhaust, so it's really a misfire? I won't be able to work on it any more today, I have to be at work at six. I didn't think to check the plug wires., but I will first thing tomorrow.

Spark plugs are in the correct order and on the correct terminals on the distributor.

Problem solved, car is running like a champ. It was a mix of a few gas fouled plugs and a couple of bad plug wires. The plugs and wires were fairly new, so i didn't think to check them. Thanks Project for planting the seed in my mind.
