no crank with clogged fuel filter??

So when my car gets clogged up in tye fuel filter the car doesnt crank. The staryer solenoid engages but tthe starter doesnt. Is this a safety thing the computer does?? When i tried turning it over the car would click and the brake light would come on... i let it sit a few minutes like 30 and came back and it would start right up.
Could my starter be going bad??
The volts were proper at like 12 maybe 10 before crank so i know the car had enough juice to crank it.
Ive staryed it at around 8 & 9 before so i know it shouldve been fine

Should i have starter tested?? Usually i swap the fuel filter and it functions fine for a few months then happens again when i dont remember to change my filter.
Already looking for a 4th gen tank to swap into so i dont bother with the rust in mine anymore.
Any help and advice is appreciated.
Thanks guys.. -Aaron

Re: no crank with clogged fuel filter??

There is , with 100% certainty , no connection between your fuel filter and your starter . In fact , your fuel pump itself could be stone dead and the starter would still spin the crankshaft ! The computer monitors nothing of the sort , no "fuel pressure monitoring" or any other such , and so your starting problems have nothing to do with your fuel system in this case .

Likely suspects here are ;

Starter

Battery

Battery cables

Or , bad connection between any of the three above named items .

Good Luck ....

Ok. Well i have a new battery
It weird its only when my filter gets clogged it wont start. Could the starter just have been too hot at that moment to function??

How do you know your fuel filter get's clogged up? And if so why don't you change it? You killed your starter.

Re: no crank with clogged fuel filter??

its happened before where the car bogs down on power and then it cuts off. i swapped the filter and looked at it and it was filthy.
i would assume its still doing the same since my car sat for 10 years, before i got my hands on it, with the same gas inside.

starter works fine tho. my dad told me on all his old chevys he had the starter wouldnt work right when the car was hot. i dont want to jack up the car and remove the statrter to get it tested only to be told its working fine then go and install it again.
to me thts what seems to be the problem but i wont know till i get my hands on a new tank or a 4th gen one with is what im working on atm...
its only happened 3 times since ive rebuilt my car.
what else should i check then?
cables, clearly the fuel filter,
should i check my fuel pump and the baggie on it aswell? possibly replace it?

Re: no crank with clogged fuel filter??

A clogged fuel filter will not pervent the engine from cranking, might not start or run good, but like was said the starter will work. If the starter clicks, but does not crank and if you try it again and it cranks the stater is going bad. The starter in my RS is doing the same thing right now. Sometimes I hit the key and it cranks and starts right away, sometimes it will click 4 times then on the 5th try it will start. Some call this a dead spot in the starter. Your dad is right about some of the old Chevys not starting when the egine gets hot.

last year I had a 72 Nova with a mildly built 307 in it. I had long tube headers on it and after driving awhile the starte would get cooked by the headers and not want to crank over till it cooled off-I would have to pop the hood sometimes to help it cool.
