need help with unknown wires
need help with unknown wires
Ok, first post here. I've been trolling here trying to find the answer to my problems for a couple of weeks now. Can't find it so I've decided to just ask.
A little background. A few weeks ago I reaquired my old '88 Camaro. It's a 2.8 MPFI with Auto. I owned the car 5 years ago and sold it to a friend who wanted it for his teenaged son. When I sold him the car it would stumble when you stepped on the throttle unless the car was warmed up first. Then it was fine.
In his quest to solve this issue something went awry. I drove the car to his house and parked it. That was the last time it ran since he bought it. Obviously this caused a little friction between us.
Anyhow, fast forward to 3 weeks ago. I winched the car up onto the trailer and brought it home. I've been tinkering with it since in hopes of bringing it back from the dead and replacing my Jetta as a DD.
After putting the plug wires back in their correct place on the dizzy I've managed to start the car. (dont know why, but firing order was 153624 instead of 123456. It makes a difference.) It runs again. So now I know it WILL run.
Time to address the known issues. Directly under the crank pulley there are 5 wires hanging out of the wire loom. The ends are cut off. I have no idea where these came from or where they go. My Haynes is of little help here. Wire colors are:
Dark Green
Dark Green
Dark Green/White
Lt. Blue/Black
Black
Any ideas?
Also, this evening I found up by the relays behind the brake booster about 2' of a pigtail with a double spade plug on the end. It was just laying there. The connector had what appeared to be a resistor or diode jumpered across the 2 terminals. Wire colors on pigtail were Dark Green & Black. Could these be from the loom under the engine? Where is this odd plug supposed to be plugged in? It isn't a sealed plug like the rest of the plugs in the engine compartment.
If anybody has any clues as to where these wires may need to go I'd appreciate the help.

the greens could be coolant temp sensors blue might be knock sensor

Nope. Those are air conditioning wires. The double spade with the diode is the wire that goes to the compressor clutch.
Peel back the wire loom running from the throttle body. Could be possible that one of the IAC wires is cut. Or, that light blue wire MAY be for one bank of the fuel injectors, but you won't know until you look. One of the dark greens MAY be for the temp light or gauge as well.
And, again, as I've said I don't know how many times now, THERE IS NO KNOCK SENSOR ON A 2.8. Unless it's in a FWD car with a 1227730/727 ECM.

ok, here are a couple of pictures of the various wires and plugs. You know, I thought that the plug with the diode looked like it belonged to the AC compressor, but the plug on the back of the unit is round. I'll look closer up around the clutch.
went down to the shop this morning to take the pics and just for giggles reached in and turned the key. The engine didn't even hesitate to start. Doubt it made one full revolution before it was running. I did notice though that the tach was reading 3200 rpm at idle. I promise, I know there is no way it is running at 3200rpm. 900 maybe. Are the tachs on these known for issues like this?

Welcome to TGO. If you have pic's of the wires & such it would be helpful.

I was typing as you were posting. Can you post larger pictures. The lower picture does look like the A/C clutch connector. It should be wrapped in a piece of black duct tape.
The tach issue is common. See the Electronics board here, up in the stickys there is a thread on fixing the tachs. Never mind that it states for the '90-'92 f-bodys, it also covers the older ones.

Yep, the plug was indeed for the AC clutch. I hadn't seen the spade terminals before. There is a plate partially obstructing my view there. So that solves the issue of that plug as well as the black wire and one green one. Now the question of which green one? There are two. While I was running the black wire up through the loom to the clutch I noticed what appears to be a temp sending unit down in there on the front of the head with no wires attached to it either.
As for the larger pictures, I started a photo album here and put those two pics in it. They are quite a bit larger in the photo album.
Feels good making progress on the old girl. Still have a ways to go but its getting there.

Re: need help with unknown wires
LT BLU/BLK and DK GRN/WHT are probably the wires for the high pressure switch on the back of the compressor.
You already found the clutch connector.
One of the dark green wires is probably for the gauge sender/light switch. Ground it and see if the gauge pegs OR the light comes on. Either the light will come on/gauge peg or nothing will happen (as the other green wire isn't connected to anything until the compressor clutch relay turns on).
