i'm curious about the removal of the smog pump, i'm not sure what i would need to do to remove it, both belt wise and anything else that goes to it. if anyone can link me to a thread about it it would greatly be appreciated

Re: smog pump removal

just remove it then use a rope or string to wrap around the pulleys and then measure it and it will tell u how long of a belt u need, then u just goto the parts store and tell them .

i know a few ppm here may be able to tell u the exact belt part number though

Re: smog pump removal

Disconnect all of the hoses that connect to the thing. Remove it and all brackets. Then, if you have A/C, you need a 915K6 belt that runs exactly the same way as before except without the pump, or non-A/C gets an 815K6.

Re: smog pump removal

Fbird90, if you use the A/C you will want to get an idler set up. This idler was used in '89 and possibly '88. In that/those years the auto equipped 2.8l engines didn't have an AIR pump. GM used an idler pulley that mounted on a spider like bracket in it's place.

This prevents the belt from whipping over a long span. This is important to prevent both vibration and cracked accessory brackets.

There is a thread about this, likely with the past year. It also allows for the use of a stock '89 belt length.

I have completed this project, on my '92 Camaro, with a 3.1L V6. I'll go find my post, and copy it here for you. You will not NEED the idler, from an '89 2.8L, BUT I recommend that you use it, if you can. There is a lot of distance, from the crank, to the alternator. I have been driving with mine, for just over 2 years. The belt is fine, but i do have a little chatter in rain and very cold temp starts, where the belt is slipping. I do not have problems with steering pressure, voltage drop, or overheating. I also average around 23-26mpg combined city/highway fuel economy AND I still have the catalytic converter on the exhaust. All highway driving, I average well over 30 mpg. With a round trip, from my home in Leavittsburg, OH to Cincinnati, OH, being 517 miles. I still had 2 needle widths over 1/4 tank of gas left. I estimate about 35 mpg, on that trip.

NOTE**** You will still have to swap out a different serpentine belt, than the one I used. I have underdrive pulleys, on both the alternator and the PS Pump.

Re: smog pump removal

I succeeded in removing the AIR Pump. I'll explain in detail how to do it. You may also need to remove your A/C, and move the PS Pump. Maverick gave me instructions how to do that, and I'll post it here too.

I had to remove my A/C, to run this setup.

1. First, remove you will need to purchase an 81 1/8" serpentine belt. You may have to get an 81 1/4" belt, since I have smaller pulleys on the alternator and P/S Pump.

2. Remove your serpentine belt and unbolt your belt tensioner.

3. You will then need to disconnect the rubber line that goes from the smog pump to the tube in the right exhaust manifold. Plug off the metal line and check valve going into the manifold.

4. Next unbolt the nuts that hold the upper steel bracket to the AIR pump, and remove it.

5. Unbolt the two bolts that go into the block, next to the timing cover. The pump should be able to be slid forward, off of the studs in the upper bracket holding the alternator.

6. Don't rip the pump out just yet. You will need to disconnect one plug from the back of it.

7. Replace your nuts on the alternator bracket, and replace the belt tensioner, and reroute the serpentine belt.

To reroute the belt, do as follows: From the alternator, go under the belt tensioner, across to the P/S pump, go around the pump with the belt coming from under the pulley over top the water pump, go around the water pump so the belt comes off the bottom of it onto the harmonic balancer, then straight up to the alternator.

Remove the pump from the engine by unbolting both brackets, take the nuts and the bolt out of the rear bracket and remove it completely, and reinstall the pump. When you align the bracket with the cylinder head (put the small bolt in the water pump to use as a pivot and help things align), use the RIGHT hole instead of the left. This is how GM mounted the non-A/C system (pulled the front end harness from a 91 without A/C and this is how it was set up).

BTW, the belt doesn't come too close to the water pump pulley in the current configuration... I've been stuck for a couple months now with having to have my empty A/C compressor bracket holding the upper part of the PS bracket because the bolt snapped in the cylinder head one day . Getting the belt on and off is a real pain with having to crank the tensioner all the way open, but at least the belt doesn't squeal anymore.

:edit: Oh, and BTW, if you want to keep power steering, only remove the nuts that hold the rear bracket on the PS pump. DO NOT remove the studs from the pump, as these also hold the reservoir to the pump and if even slightly loosened, WILL cause a PS fluid leak.
Here is the instructions, Maverick gave me, and they work perfectly.

Re: smog pump removal

Nobody believes me, that i get the mileage I get, either. I tell them, that I can go over 500 miles on one tank, and they are just stunned.

Hell, with a turbo, I'm not surprised that you are getting over 32mpg. Turbos are an excellent way to improve efficiency, by mainly scavenging exhaust gas from the engine quicker.

Re: smog pump removal

I'd like to remove my smog pump on my 88' 350 TPI. I am going to use the smog pump delete pully. Is the removal straight forward? Do I need to cap lines or remove anything else to get the smog pump out?

Re: smog pump removal

I'm not sure on an 88 350 V8. I believe the casting changed, from the first gen V8 castings in 87. Best place to find info for 350 V8's be on Car Craft.com, or by picking up a Chevy Small Block Interchange manual. Haynes and Chilton Manuals may tell you how to remove it, but it isn't likely, because neither of them endorse removing smog equipment, as it is illegal.
