Starter Motor replacement 91 Camaro !
Starter Motor replacement 91 Camaro !
Since I live in the north part of the world, it's time to release the lion from the cage
And ofcource with that there are some things to replace...
I have to replace a starter motor with solenoid on my 91 camaro RS 3.1L and I am wondering if anyone can help me with the instructions (step by step) on how to do it and also if anyone have some pic of it.
Really gratefull for all your help !
Peace

Re: Starter Motor replacement 91 Camaro !
1. Disconnect battery (you're talking several hundred amps at 12V... You don't want to ground that out!)
2. Lift front of car or just passenger's front wheel.
3. Use a 17mm socket to get the big nut off of the solenoid followed by the positive battery cable and the power wires.
4. Use (8mm?) socket to get solenoid switching wire off of post. PUT BOTH NUTS BACK ON THE SOLENOID SO THEY DON'T GET LOST.
5. Get under the car, use a 15mm socket to remove 2 bolts holding starter to engine. Pull starter shims out from between motor and engine block and retain for use if needed.
6. Pull starter towards front of engine to get the nose out from inside bellhousing/dust shield. Rotate and drop out.

Re: Starter Motor replacement 91 Camaro !
I say some videos on the youtube regarding replacement of starter motor and some of them mentioned that after replacing the starter motor the engine might not crank or crank but not start and it can be something to do with the vehicle's theft system.
I have a chip on the key and alarm, so can it make the vehicle not to start after replacing the starter motor ?
Or is it simply just to replace the motor and turn the key and hope for the best ?
Anything specific I need to do in order to remove and install the starter motor?

Best thing to do is get a Haynes manual, they can get you through a lot of these basic jobs pretty well..
