91 RS 3.1 missing power

My 3.1 auto with 65,xxx miles on it seems to be lacking a lot of power.
0-60 times are up in the 12-14 second range.
Also, when accelerating with consistent RPM's I'll hit about 45mph and all of sudden I'll get this pretty noticeable power increase but it still remains in the same gear?

I'm fairly new to thirdgens and all, so please excuse any dumb questions/statements.

I'm just looking for advice on what I can do to fix this and get her running how she should be.

Thanks!

Well if its a automatic your not gonna get much faster then about 11 seconds to get to 60Mph if its bone stock. The power band on these engines in all in the mid rpms. 3-4500 rpms is what it likes to make a litle bit of power at. Once you get over say, 65 mph, its a slouch big time in its stock form.

But sound like you may just need to go though and do a good ole fashion tune up.

Does the car seem to run bad under normal(not wide open throttle)areas? Any check engine lights?

Any idea on how some of the parts on the car are? Such as the spark plugs, the cap and rotor, spark plug wires, fuel filter, air filter, stuff such as that.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been able to tune her up yet, but I'll be sure to do that first.

And yeah the car sometimes feel like its almost choking when I barely hit the throttle, such as when i'm sitting at a red light and it turns green. The car will also pop up the SES light when I'm sitting idle in the parking lot of school and then go away

Check out this link and read it. See if you can catch the car when the ses light is on and get the code, so you know what it says is wrong with the system.
