Gas tank removal

I am replacing the fuel pump to solve the low pressure problem. I can't get the tank out of the car. So far the heat shields, stabilizer bars and exhaust are removed. I have dropped the rear end as far as possible without breaking the brake line. I cannot turn the tank enough to get the filler neck clear. What is the trick to getting the tank out?

Re: Gas tank removal

When I did my fuel pump I disconnected the fuel line from the frame, panhard bar and panhard brace support, heat shield, and exhaust. I also disconnected the tops of the rear shocks, raised the rear as high as I could safely do so, and dropped the axle as far as it would go. I had all four wheels on jacks to make for lots of clearance. Lastly, when nothing else would work, I asked my daughter to observe and guide the filler neck through the opening. Height and patience are the tricks to getting it out. It's much easier to get it back in. Good luck. Check out the link, response #7,

Re: Gas tank removal

Thanks for the link. I have done everything you did except get a helper. The shocks and sway bar are loose, the right spring is out, and the exhaust is out. In order to get the diff to hang lower I will have to disconnect hydraulic brake line which I really do not want to do. It looks like I have to rotate the front of the tank down to get the filler neck out but the tank hits the pumpkin. I have searched the site trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong but no dice.

Re: Gas tank removal

A second person really helps a lot! You can remove the plastic cover in the left rear wheel well and have someone easily look at the filler neck to guide you. Also the brake hose/line can be stretched further by removing all the line clamps that hold the lines to the car. You can get like 2 more inches that way.

Just did mine last week and almost got stuck where you are. Dropping the axle a bit more helped a lot.

Re: Gas tank removal

Thanks Odie, I took some more stuff loose and lowered the axle a few more inches. It's out now and the new pump should be arriving USPS any time now. Thanks to all of you for your patience and advice. As of now 2 broken sway bar bolts and 1 bolt broken in the cat.
