3.4L Build Questions

Hi, there!

I am new to this forum. But I want to go to the core at once, because I feel that you guys are the only ones who are able to give me a comprehensive answer for my burning questons.

My questions start with: How many HP are REASONABLY to expect from a naturally aspired, street/track-tuned 3.4 L stroker Fiero-engine?

As someone else has pointed out before, I want to retain the matching numbers. That's really important to me, so there's no discussion required at this point.

My way, to achieve my ultimate goal, would be going to http://www.engine-parts.com/ for their 3.4 L stroker engine, have it tuned and ported in-house, and have it equipped with a MECHANICAL Rotrex-supercharger http://www.rotrex.com/ (sorry, actually only the german Rotrex-page http://www.rotrex-deutschland.de is accessible: Probably the swedish Rotrex-guys need the reindeers which are usually driving swedish power-stations to pull Santa's sled, actually)...

Due to legal necessities, it ought to be an all EFI, all the time engine. I am even willing to invest in a modern, state-of-the-art EFI system to achieve that.

My question: How many HP will a well-tuned 3.4 L stroker be able put out while NATURALLY aspired, and in which configuration? I need these data to make the best choice for the Rotrex-blower.

Important note: I give a damn about a smooth idle. What I want, instead, is mid-range and top-end power, to chase Porsches over small country-roads. Torque will be delivered by the Rotrex-blower, anyway. But what I need is a much higher rev-limit, to achieve my goal. 7000 rpm is a must, and the higher, the better.

What do you think? Give me your input. Cheers!

Second thoughts:

On second thoughts, equipping the stock Fiero long block overhauled by http://www.engine-parts.com/GMV6/gm34da.html with two four-valve DOHC cylinderheads from a fifth gen. 1995-1999 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Monte_Carlo might be another quite straightforward solution.

Breathing freely, the Monte-Carlo Four-valve DOHC is said to develop 275 HP in standard-trim already. With even a humble 5 PSI supercharging (No intercoolers required!), this engine should develop in excess of 350 HP at 7000 rpm with ease.

Pistons: Forged JE's http://www.jepistons.com/ProductReleases.aspx or

H-beam forged steel conrods AND slipper-pistons from Carillo: http://www.cp-carrillo.com/Tech/Pist...0/Default.aspx

damper: Fluidampr http://www.fluidampr.com/

In this case, I might even dispense with the matching numbers and rather transplant an overhauled Monte Carlo-Engine http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:G...tion_II_LQ.jpg into the Fiero of my dreams http://s111.photobucket.com/user/mon...Dream.jpg.html .

AFAIK, there are Monte Carlos in abundance to have on US-scrapyards, which virtually BEG for a second life as a sportscar-engine. Is that right?

Your thoughts?

Re: 3.4 Stroker Kit

First off, the block is the weak point in all 60* engines made after 85 (before that it was the crank).

Second, if you want a 3.4, get one. You overbore the 3.1 that far, you're not going to be chasing hot German cars very long before the engine grenades. Especially if you add boost and don't tune it right.

Third, you CANNOT just throw DOHC heads on a stock Fiero block. The DOHC and OHV engines are different starting at the block. The oiling is completely different, for starters, due to the engine having the cams in the heads as opposed to the block.

Holy thread resurrection!

3.4 iron head with some boost should get you to 300hp with the right tuning. Consider a 7730 swap or '165 swap with $12P for tuning.

Re: 3.4 Stroker Kit

Thanks for the info, Maverick H1L.

I just signed up to 60degreev6, too, to get some urgently needed answers - but, somehow, that forum doesn't let me post questions, yet, although I am signed up properly.

Anyway: Time will tell.

BTW: Do you know of a good tuner/workshop who is specialized in the LQ1-engine? I mean, I don't need to re-invent the wheel to get a good roll. Therefore, I would rather have some professional do the job, who knows perfectly well what he's doing.

Any suggestions welcome!

34blazer, do you know a good workshop for tuning the 3,4 L Ironhead? Because, although I am quite good at turning nuts n' bolts, I rather leave such surgical work to the pro's who know exactly, what they are doing (and offer some warranty for their work, too...).

If I can get 300 HP from a blown iron head, so be it!

Regarding the rpm-limit: This is far more a question of gearing. A 300 HP 3.4 -Fiero should reach a Vmax close to 165 mph, versus the stock 124 mph at 4500 rpm with the nimble 139 HP 2.8 L-engine.

To achieve 165 mph with identical gearing, either the engine has to rev up to 6000 rpm, OR I will need a diff with a 25 % lower gearing, to achieve 165 mph at 4500 rpm.

On the other hand, if a tuned iron head will deliver it's max HP at 6000 rpm instead of 4500 rpm, the stock gearing would be just fine to go 165 mph.

Speaking of gearing: Is there an LSD availlable for the Fiero somewhere?

Kindest regards, Montanamotor (your mad german motorist of coice)

This should keep up with those pesky Porsches.

Please leave dead threads alone. There's no need to pull up a thread that's nearly 13 years old.

No offense intended, Six-Shooter. It's only that in some other forums, you get balked at, if you START a thread anew, if there has been one covering your topic in the past, already.

I was only trying to do it right.

Thanks for putting me straight.

Cheers!
