89 RS 2.8 hunts for idle

hey guys and girls have a bit of a problem..
just picked up a 89 rs t-top clean body just a few dents
my prob is I have a running issue.
car starts fine, but hunts for idle when rpm start to drop, hesitates a split second on accel, but seems to run fine when ur on the gas. a few of the vacuum lines are missing , but im fixing that and the egr vacuum control assembly was damaged by the previous owner.. I have an idea that the damaged part is most of my problem.. but go figure its a discontinued part.. does anyone know of a replacement?
I have a few more issues but that's for a diff thread

Re: 91 RS 2.8 hunts for idle

Well if it's a 91 then it would have a 3.1l and a electronic egr. But if you are seeing a vacuum line to the egr then it's a 2.8 and pre 1990 unless someone did a swap on the car.

I would make sure you don't have vacuum leaks causing the problem. Check the vacuum in inches of hg when it's idling. You want a steady vacuum and iirc 18 give or take inches. To be honest I forgot what a stock engine pulls in Hg.

There are old style vacuum actuated egr on ebay and such or look in the classifieds on here.

Re: 89 RS 2.8 hunts for idle

Hey sparky
I have not figured out the whole problem yet but i have had to replace the egr vacuum control assembly. I need to replace vac lines. I also cleaned the iac and the car does run but from the look of the iac i will need to remove the throttle body to clean everything. There was alot of buildup on the iac. I am also fighting some electrical probs. The last owner decided to hook abunch of stuff up by toggle switches.. So theres wires everywhere. Its also hooked up to a push button start do to a problem with the starter running off the key.. Got a bunch of stuff to figure out. But looks like most of the problem so far is just a lack of maintanace by the last owner..

Re: 89 RS 2.8 hunts for idle

Well, the first thing I would do is a full tune up. Plugs, wires, cap/rotor, new fluids and filters. New vac hoses and intake manifold gasket set if necessary along with injector o-rings for manifold end (MS93020 intake set and 800-9220 o-ring kit). If you're determined to fully clean the throttle body by disassembling it, you can get a throttle body gasket kit. I will warn you, however, that those screws holding the top to the actual body are a royal pain in the butt. They are a T25 and very thin, so be very careful with them. Use anti-seize on them if you manage to get it apart and DO NOT overtighten.

Also, make sure the PCV hose and the rubber boots on the idle air bypass pipe are undamaged (also check the glued joints at the T in the back of the manifold!) and replace the PCV valve. You may need to wrap electrical tape around the valve for proper seating into the grommet. And also may need to replace the rubber elbow on the other valve cover to the breather pipe.

Too bad it's not 10 years ago... I bought my new EVRV (the EGR solenoid assembly) for a measly $80 after I got sick of throwing code 32. Too bad I already threw it out on the bracket because I got sick of not being able to sell it...

Re: 89 RS 2.8 hunts for idle

Hey mav..
Done the cap rotor plugs and wires.. Did the iac and the iac relearn.. The throttle body has to be dirty the iac was pretty dirty.. Is there a "safer" way to clean the throttle body..
I mean car starts off the first crank but with out a new pcv and vac lines im still gonna have a studder or stumble when jumpin on it.
Ya to bad u did not have the egr vac control assembly... There pretty expensive now and very hard to find.. I got lucky and found some new stock cost me 170 though.. Def worth it made a big diff on the idle of the car helped a lil on the stumble prob.
I wanna pull the valve covers and clean with a screw driver and shop vac.. Get all the build up out for proper oil flow.. Also wanna do the valve lash... I have a quiet valve train right now and no knocking so motor is pretty solid.
Do u know of a proper way to test for vac to make sure all is well with the system

Nope. Not really a safer way to clean the TB. The top has to come off to clean all of the passages thoroughly. Even if you could remove all of the running gear and the vacuum plug, if you were to soak the TB in something like carb cleaner, you might run the risk of destroying the shaft seals and you would need to replace the gasket anyways because the cleaner might eat it.
