Heads and intake

So I've read on here about using 3.1/3.4 heads and intake on the 2.8. What I haven't seen is why do you have to use the intake also? Are the heads that much different that the intakes are not interchangeable? Even with I little modding, could a 2.8 intake be used?

Re: Heads and intake

2.8/3.1/3.4 heads are all the same , the only difference is between the early carbed heads and the later fuel injected heads , u want to use the fuel injected heads

now the heads off the fwd 3100 and 3400/3500 are different and reguire u to use the correct fwd intake

Re: Heads and intake

Ok, so if I have a 2.8 mpi intake, that will work with the other heads so long as they are from a rwd? Next question- I've read that the 3.4 heads will boost the cr to anywhere from 12:1 to like 13.5:1, I obviously don't want that but maybe a little more comp. would be nice, any thoughts on which heads to use? Thanks for the reply!

Re: Heads and intake

I think your meaning fwd aluminum heads... gen2 and gen3 3100 3400 3500 exc. Those heads will bump up compression alot if you do not use fwd pistons because the head combustion chamber on the fwd heads are much smaller then the rwd iron heads that are on your 2.8L. Using fwd heads on your engine is commonly called a hybrid swap. Requires alot of changes in the motor and uses alot of things off the fwd engine such as the dis ignition intakes custom pushrods...exc

And yes Gen 1 iron heads from the 2.8 3.1 and 3.4 are all basically interchangeable and the same.
