cranks but doesn't fire

Hi I have a 89 camaro standard 2.8 v6 mpfi

Let me start out by saying the car ran fine at first but for some reason when I would come to a stop sign and throw it into neutral the car rpm's would shoot up to about 2000-2500 and would stay there for a couple of seconds then come back slowly. Scanned the car got code 44 I believe (don't quote me) but it was tps problem, So me thinking it was something to do with the iac or the tps I replaced them. I put the tps back at the same position it was, but still got the same rpm's shoot up. Couple days past and every day that past the car got more sluggish to the point where the car would crank but wouldn't fire up endless I gave it gas while turning the key. Not only was it harder to start but started throwing black smoke at start ups I'm assuming beacause the car was running to rich now because of the tps not being adjusted? Any ways couple days before it kicked the bucket it was idling really low at stops signs to the point where it's about to turn off and I notice my battery was really low when it did that as well as my oil pressure and my cluster lights would flicker, but rpm's would flutter rapidly and wasn't responsive when I put it back into gear. The car started sounding bad as if it was missing or if it was cammed. Then my battery died and I got a new one and never turned on again. So it's been sitting for about two weeks now and I can't get it to fire don't know if my fuel pump is bad, don't know what it sounds like either is it the humming noise after you turn the key and a click? If so yes? Any ways I get a stong gas smell in the engine bay so it is getting fuel? Forgot to mention the other day when I was looking at the distributor I was movin it around and notice a lot of play, kinda loose maybe got out of timing ? But cleaned plugs cause they had a lot of carb from when it was running bad but dist wires plugs are all fairly new . Sorry for long post.

Re: cranks but doesn't fire

You need to get the distributer fixed in place properly then start on the usual stuff. Any mods to the engine? How old? Original parts etc. etc. Don't just buy stuff until you know what is wrong. Get someone to turn the engine over while you spray some starter fluid in the throttle body. If you hear it catch for a second or two it means you've got sparks at the right time but no fuel. Test your fuel pressure at the rail. Check the injector resistance and the fuel pressure regulator. Do some searches on those in the V6 section and you'll find plenty of threads on checking components and diagnosing the problem you have.
