$200 budget
$200 budget
what is the most performance gains from pouring 200 into my car...ion other words i am on a 200 dollar budget, what is the best way to spend it (performance wise)

i was thinking about a cam, or
how about roller rockers, or
i was also thinking about geting a flowmaster 80' or some dynomax, or
the stabilizer bar that goes across the engine (reduces flex in body)
i already am geting a 160* stat
how about a jet stage 2 computer chip to go with my 160*thermo...

Where is TomP, he must not have seen this one yet. Well a complete Tune up would be the best for the $200. Tom will be on here soon and post the link to it.
already got a new startermotor , new distributer cap rotor coil etc.., new plugs, new fuel filters and oil filters
i run only synthethetic oils, oil has already been changed, even got new antifreeze.
i want some more torque out of my engine...

$200.00 is not much of a budget. There is no way you can buy a cam and install it for less than $200. You can buy a cam but it will need more for labor cost, even if you do it yourself. Same for roller rockers, you need gaskets, this and that. You can buy a used nitrous system but that cost more money filling bottles.
What I would do for my mustang or TTA, is to race someone for $200 and double my money, but that's just me.

i think i am going to buy and install the jet 2 chip, we installed my dads hypertech chip so it wont be much trouble...
brings the cheaper mods... flowmaster 80's series
but leaning towards the computer upgrade
if i were to do the cam/rockers i would be saving up more money...
ps $200 is a prefered limit i know its not much... :P

how about some poly-graphite bushings from p-s-t?
front control arm bush: $50
lower control arm bush:$50
sway bar bush: $25
panhard rod bush: $20
end link kit: $25
total: $170 plus shipping
good handling = good performance

For 200 bucks your best bet is a CAM if you can install it yourself. Otherwise I would get a dynomax cat back, chrome tips and a high flow converter.
What I would do know being 25 years old would be stick the 200 bucks in FNV or CSCO stock and sit on it until it is 1K then mod my car..

Here's what ya do.
Open hood.
Have a new timing chain yet?
Next, look at exhaust system, especially the cross over pipe.
On the passenger side.
See that "T"?
Replace the pipes with a HI PO FLOW junction "Y" to the CC.
That'll gain ya five to 10 HP constant, every RPM range, and your engine will rev quicker (freer flowing exhaust).
I recently found a pipe premade, like that.
But, to costly for my budget.
I'm seeking a cheaper alternative. Like using a twin exhaust tip, prior to the CC and getting short section of pipe made to connect to factory exhaust manifolds.
That should come in at $100, that exhaust pipe work.
And the timing chain will run ya about $50 delivered (Northern Auto parts 800-831-0884).
Then go from there. You may even have some change left over for more gas!

About the stage 2 chip. A guy on the board has a chip for sale, (can't think of the name) its a stage 2 jet chip for a 3.1. I don't know what year your car is so I thought you might be interested. He wants $75 OBO. Here his email Slickwell@aol.com .
As for a cam, you can buy one for 200 and if your willing to let you car sit for a weekend or longer to install it you can do a cam for $200, but if you don't have the mechanical ability for $200 your better off getting a better exhaust.

Please do not waste your money on a chip or pulleys at this point. You would be so much better off holding that 200 until it is 400 and get a CAM or Nitrous, or Gears. I wish I was smarter when I first got my camaro and didn't waste my money on those cheap easy to do mods and did like my buddy. His first mods were 1.6 roller rockers and 105# valve springs, then the cam and new timming chain. I have twice as many bolts on for the same price and am drastically slower because those mechanical valve train mods outproduce me in horsepower hands down.
Don't buy into the chip, pulleys until you get your CAM, Rockers, Chain, Exhaust then.....

(laughs) I'm predictable, eh, Joe_L?
Yes; search for my Major Tuneup list; I almost guarantee you've missed something from it.
Plus, dropping in a cam might not give you your best performance yet, since your exhaust is still stock. Definately get the Dynomax catback, it's part #WLK-17493 from Summitracing.com. JCWhitney has their own completely different part #... any other store, ask for Dynomax exhaust #17493.
And I agree about the chip- if you can find one used, great; but don't spend top dollar on one yet. Same with an MSD 6 box- but you'll see a bit of improvement with an aftermarket spark coil.
Got an automatic? Buy the Trans-Go shift kit (Summit, $120), and install it yourself (trans fluid, $30). I installed the B&M Shift Kit (would've gotten Transgo if I knew back then how much better it is) myself, it's really not that bad. It's a bit scary; but not bad. Got a manual? Buy a short-throw shifter from B&M.
You didn't mention what year of car; if it's a year that doesn't have 3.42 rear gears, you could buy a junkyard axle with 3.42's and swap it in for less than the price of new gears ($200) & installation ($200, needs special precision tools). You could also buy new rear tires that are a bit "shorter" in height than what you've got- that will lower your "effective" rear gear ratio, and could make a 3.42 axle act like a 3.55.
The http://www.p-s-t.com suspension upgrades are a great idea, but you can buy their full kit for the 82-92 f-bodies for $159. (Online catalog, Performance polygraphite kits for GM, Polygraphite front end kit for GM (not the super kit), there's the 82-92 Camaro/Firebird.)
Also, think of getting larger front & rear sway bars from a junkyard. Use new bushings on them (but take the junkyard ones, you'll need the brackets for the front) from http://www.energysuspension.com. Use an open-ended adustable wrench on the CENTER of the bars to determine how large yours are, and take that measurement & wrench with you to the junkyard. Measure your bar in millimeters; that's how you order the bushings.
A strut tower brace is a cool idea, but I haven't heard of a V6'er yet that's had one installed. As you know, our engines are "60 degree motors", that's the angle between the left & right bank of pistons. The v8's are 90-deg degree motors- that means the angle's greater, so overall... the V8's are shorter in height. A STB that fits a V8 might not fit over a V6- so if you try it, and it works, let us know!!!! If not, return it!
See, I've got more ideas other than tuneups!

#WLK-17493 from summit racing, thats a dual muffler
check it out:

also
2.5 OD is the stock piping size? how would i go about measuring the piping diameter just in case my pipes are of a different size.
is this how u measure it?
taking a piece of string and wraping it around the pipe(right after the cc) then mark the circumference and see how long it is on a ruler?
would the dual muffler setup from summit give me same ground clearance?

That exhaust set up is the ugliest thing I've ever seen...
It's almost as bad as the factory "T" pipe... as a matter of fact... same angle, just better metal.
I don't know what people are talking about when they say true duals is impossible... it's not, at all... If I can get a picture of the undercarriage of an F-body I'll show you all...
twin 2 inch for v6... twin 2.5 inch for the V8 brothers...
I would be very interested in what a true dual V6 would sound like with turbo mufflers... headers would be a must though... I don't have the money, so don't look at me...

Hey I'm getting a hooker aerochamber for my 89 firebird that just recieved a low milage 3.4 liter. Where could I get a new y pipe to connect to the manifolds ? whats the cheapest way and whats the easiest expensive way.??? thanx
I've been scouting around. Found one for $99 premade.
I may grab it, only one left.
Rest of ya, make it outta a muffler exhaust tip twin pipe, going towards the current exhaust manifolds pipe. Single end to the CC.
