2.8 V6 Crank?

Hey guys,

Just wondering, as the '85 MPFI is known for having the upgraded tougher crank, is there anyway to check that my engine does in fact have the tougher one?

It's an MPFI motor but it doesn't have the serpentine setup, it's all on seperate belts.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

Re: 2.8 V6 Crank?

Hi there,
I would check the casting date on the block. If the engine hasn't been apart, and the date is later than 1984, the last year of the carbed engines, then it should have the tougher crank.

The other option is to pull out the engine, disassemble it, take the crank to a machine shop, have it magnafluxed, test for tensile... nah, just check the date code.

Take a look on the front of the engine block, there should be a flat machined boss, either in front of the driver's (sorry, left) cylinder head or in the Vee in front of the intake manifold. Should be a code stamped on it. You might have to clean away years of grease and grime to find it.

Re: 2.8 V6 Crank?

Here is a link to a document with info on how to find and decode the date codes an various GM engines. Hope this helps.
