89 2.8v6 needs a little help

Hi guys wasup so after the sad endine to my 92 3.1 one build (tree landed on it)
i went out and bout a 89 rs 2.8 liter that runs and drives. And this time i was thinking of doing turbo build. but first i gotta getting running right and need a little help okay the car starts up first time just about everytime and drives fine when ur on the gas all though even for the v6 it feels a little sluggish i had another one ik what they do lol but any way it drives fun but when u pull up to a red light or stop and sit to long sometimes the idle will start chopping badly and sometimes it can catch itself and other times thew car dies it always starts right back up but will do it again if i get stuck at a long light it also does the same thing when like backing out a a parking lot a letting the car coast back if i turn the wheel it get rough ad choppy i had one guy tell me i had two bad piston rings causing low compression in 1 and 2 cylinder but if that was the case the motor would be somoking which it doesnt i had another say that the the head gaskests may be bad any other opionons on what to do to get her running right again would be great
thanks guys

Hi there,
Not to quibble too much, but can you please use some punctuation? Seriously, one big long sentence? It gets a bit hard to read.

Now to your problem: do you have any check engine codes? If not, I would suggest removing the throttle body and giving it a good clean. I use a toothbrush and throttle body cleaner or carb cleaner. Also take out the IAC valve and clean the tip, and the passages inside the throttle body. That might help with better control over the airflow at idle.

Re: 89 2.8v6 needs a little help

Always, always, ALWAYS do a full tune up when buying a car if it hasn't been done recently. Or at least check to see if everything will be fine for a while before doing so. And I wouldn't trust some Joe Schmoe that doesn't use a gauge and tells me my car "has low compression in cylinders 1 and 2" just by looking at or hearing it.

1. FULL TUNE UP.
2. Put some good gas in the tank.
3. Compression and fuel pressure tests with verified written results if not done personally.

One of the reasons your engine "feels sluggish" might be the running poorly and the other is the loss of 20 ft lbs of torque...

Re: 89 2.8v6 needs a little help

I gave her new spark plugs, new dizzy cap and rotor, new wires ran some fuel system cleaner, fresh gas and cleaned throttle. Still idles choppy when at a stand still fine when driving but at red lights and stop sings gets really chopy. Sometimes it dies other times it catches itself. Sorry for grammar I typed original message on my phone lol. Any help figuring out this problem is appreciated it bugs me not knowing what I need to fix lol

Hi there,
you said you cleaned the throttle, do you mean inside the throttle body? The most effective way to do it is to take the TB off the car. Also did you clean the tip of the IAC and the passages inside the TB?

Is it throwing any new codes? What codes do you have?

Re: 89 2.8v6 needs a little help

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. It seems pretty strange that it would idle poorly and almost stall but not throw any codes.

Last suggestion is check all your fuses, make sure none are blown. Try swapping some fuses around, see if any problems pop up that might be following a particular fuse. I have seen it before, a fuse looks okay, but is actually blown, and when replaced, the problem goes away. Just a thought.

Hi there,
Out of curiosity, have you done any data logging? Do you know what your air intake temperature reading is? How about your coolant temp reading? If the sensors are old, they could give inaccurate readings, which would make your engine run poorly, and give you bad fuel economy.
