So I've got a 1991 camaro rs 305 tbi. It runs rough and acts like its not getting enough fuel. The first day this happened I was driving and it seemed like it just didn't have much power. I parked at the store and came back out and started it and could hardly keep it running. When you first start it it will instantly die unless you play with the throttle, and after a few minutes it will run without shutting off but it will rev to about 2500 rpm and then almost die off for a long time without touching the throttle but if you put it in gear it will die. If you let it run for a while ( don't have an exact time because it differs) it will smooth out and almost run perfect until you put it in gear but it won't shut off anymore. I have replaced plugs, wires,cap, rotor button, map sensor, iac valve, battery, ignition coil, and pickup coil. I have not checked fuel pressure yet and even though it acts like fuel I don't think it is. I will be checking pressure soon just don't have the tools to yet. I honestly don't know where to go next (besides fuel). I was thinking converter but I've never seen one get better the hotter it got. Anyone else had this problem?

cant give much help till you find out pressure ... but while you are just throwing cash at it, change the fuel filter ... and while you are getting one of those rent the fuel pressure tester from autozone, go outside and check pressure, then take it back in and get your money back

 

I am a mechanic I currently work at a Ford dealership I'm not trying to throw money at it I just haven't been able to check pressure and I guess you would just have to be at the car your self but I'm 99.9% sure it's not fuel related. I I'm just looking for some input on what places to check or if anyone has had this similar problem. And I have removed my filter and there isn't anything wrong with it. Sadly I'm used to newer cars where you can monitor almost everything with a computer.

 

is it using a lot of fuel when running ... i was driving my iroc back from st. louis one day and pulled out to pass a car on the interstate. when i did it just fell on its face ... but it was not the same as yours, it ran ok at an idle just had no power and used a ton of gas all while not getting over 40 mph on flat land ... turned out that part of the cat broke off inside and clogged the exit ... one test for this is just to get it running and see if the gasses coming from the tailpipe are getting way to hot ... it was to hot to hold my hand close to it

 

Well I can't smell but my wife says there is a very strong rich gas smell. I didn't pay attention to the heat of the exhaust gasses but it seemed like plenty was coming out but I may loosen the exhaust before the converter soon to see if it runs differently thanks

 

my car also seemed to have enough getting out the back, but it was plugged bad ... and also smelled of gas

ok, good luck ... if that is the trouble, just use a pipe and hammer to knock all the stuff out to get you going ... then replace later if you want to ... or cut it off and put a pipe in its place

 

If it is I'll try to replace asap because a lot of people have complained about losing a bit of mpg. I was getting 32 mpg on the highway and 28 in town I do t want to lose that the way gas prices are lol

 

humm ... i would have thought the better flow would give a bit better mpg

 

While you're waiting to check pressure may want to check ohms on your injectors. Should be in the 1.3 ohm range. Also visually check the flow of your injectors. Should have a conical spray pattern, not dripping or flowing.

 

best way i have found to test spray pattern of injectors is with a timing/strobe light

 

any word yet on the problem?
