89 2.8l RS repacement fuel tank - cap too large

Hello all,

My daughter and I are still working away at her 89 RS 2.8l. We ordered a replacement fuel tank from Rock Auto and installed it. The problem is that the gas cap is too large to thread into the filler neck. Has anyone had this problem and if so what did you do for a gas cap?

Thanks in advance.

If it’s a spectra you should call them one of the tanks shown for your application says a cap is included.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, no it is a Platinum Pro tank (the spectra one we had previously installed the filler neck did not fit well and cap leaked) so we took a shot with another brand.

Tank fits very well but cap wont screw on. She can definitely try the file/sandpaper suggestion! That sounds like the plan.

I had the same problem after my tank replacement. I don't know what brand tank the shop put in. I ordered a locking stant for my car and it didn't fit either. I pulled a cap off an 80s oldsmobile toronado or something and it fit.
