Engine oil grade question...
Engine oil grade question...
I've been using good old Castrol GTX oil in my bird since i had it and it works great . The odometer just turned 212,000 and time for an oil chage. I've been thinking about trying the Valvoline MAX LIFE oil, the one specifically made for "Higher milage engines". any one ever try this? is this a good switch i should make.

Higher milage oil in my opinion is a bunch of crap. They add a few additives then rip the public off with it. Some people do like it, and says it works better. I used it once, and I saw no difference between that and 5000 beyound Quakerstate. I run STP treatment, not cause its any good, but because it thickens the oil up some, slows leaks, and I don't burn any oil with over 150,000 on the odometer.
You can try it, your car has more than 50,000 extra miles on it, so it might make a difference on your car, But I saw none.

I have 116(Half of your number) but I have ran Catrol Syntec(10-30 summer & 5-30 winter) since I bought the car. It works good for me. I change the oil about every 5k miles too. A little more to spend at the change but it lasts longer.
I'd just keep using what you use now . My grandpa was a mechanic and owned his own shop .He told me one time , stick to the same oil you use . Sometimes you can burn oil and the car will smoke if you change .So if the car likes it now .I'd keep it happy

I dont know about that syntec stuff, heard its not safe for higher milage engines, too high in deteregent i think

synths are always better, they just cost more. my car has 107k on hte clock, a lot fo that was racked up in racing enviroments(drag, solo2, road racing, street racing, commuting on the pa turnpike
.....you get the idea) and it doesn't burn a drop of oil.later

Synthetics can be bad for a high mileage engine in the fact that they might cause oil leaks. The molecules in synthetic are smaller than organic oil, so they can slide past worn seals easier. I'd never try synthetic in my 226,800 mile motor.. it's too late now.
I use regular 'ol Valvoline 10w30 in my motor. I saw the high-mileage stuff, and was going to try it for kicks- then I saw the price. I change my oil regularly anyway, so I don't see a need for a switch. If you want, you could probably mix in a quart of the Max Life stuff with 3.5 quarts of normal oil (of the same viscosity).
