Did my engine just resolve its own issues?

I am new to the site as well as a new third gen owner. I have questions about how my car has been performing lately which seems very strange. Any input would be appreciated! I purchased a 1992 Firebird with the V6. 115k original miles and the car is completely stock. When I first got the car, it was running rather poorly. It would stall after slowing down like when approaching a traffic light. I read the stored engine codes and the read out indicated the engine was running rich and the engine is running lean. I had a shop investigate and they replaced the O2 sensor. The car no long ran lean however, they still found the engine running rich. After further investigation they came back and said that 3 of the 6 fuel injectors were faulty. I believe they tested the electronics resistance to determine this? I’m not a mechanic and I don’t have the work write-up in front of me right now. They said that this would help the engine idle smoothly. I declined the repair. I now started driving around with the car regularly. Idle was rough and I could smell strong gas smell evident of a rich mixture. I felt the exhaust coming out of the pipe and it was puffy as if it wasn’t running on all cylinders. Acceleration was also very poor. I felt as though the engine was done for. The torque converter also seems as though it was going bad. The whole car would rumble at around 34 to 40 mph.One day when I was cursing on the freeway, the car just started functioning properly. The engine was smooth. Idling was smooth. Acceleration felt right as though the engine had power again. The exhaust was no longer puffy, and the torque converter no longer seemed to be an issue. It’s like the car just decided to behave all of a sudden. This is really strange. Why is this? Do I have a concern that it will go bad again? Was my shop full of it when they said the injectors were faulty? I ran two tanks through the car since I got it and both times I put STP fuel injector cleaner in when I filled up. Thanks in advance!

If the car sat for a while it is possible the fuel system was gummed up and you had some really bad gas.
