Driveshaft removal?
Driveshaft removal?
I've got a couple of questions on removing the driveshaft from an '88 Camaro w/ 2.8. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it.
First, when it comes to removing the driveshaft, I've taken out the 4 bolts holding it in place. The book I've got said it should just come right out, but the way its in makes it appear that it needs to be pushed in to slide out of the half circle looking U joint.
Also I can't find anywhere where it says to what torque the bolts should be tightened to. Anyone have experience with this?
Thanks alot,
Patrick

ok, since no one else has, i think i'll take a stab at this
remove the 4 screws from the companion flange like you did already
now..............slide the driveshaft INTO the transmission
a SLIP-JOINT is how the driveshaft is connected to the tranny
that means you can SLIP the driveshaft further into the transmission to remove it from the companion flange
hope you understand all this technical lingo.........

I had to use a crowbar between the u-joint and axle's pinion flange to push the driveshaft into the trans. It'll slide in quite a bit; if it's not moving, it just needs help. It's a good idea to put some trans fluid on the outside of the driveshaft yoke that will slide into the trans- it'll help protect against dirt damaging your rear trans seal. The four 11mm driveshaft bolts are 15-20 ft/lbs only... I think I went for 18 when I did mine. Try not to damage the u-joint caps when you remove the driveshaft... don't let the driveshaft fall to the floor when you pry it inwards. Maybe put an old jacket between the floor & driveshaft in case it does fall!
