engine idles very rough

Well, If I were TomP, which I am not, I would ask you when was the last time your car recieved a complete tune-up?

Now I would say to try and tame down the rough idle buy checking your timing and see if it is set correctly. Then check for vacuum leaks.
The black smoke; I had my front crank seal go, it was $12 to replace and an hour of my time.
When it went it sprayed oil all over the exhaust, so I would see black smoke.
