Timing pointer question

Hi there,
My 2.8 is running great, but I have a question about the engine timing. First, I used my timing light, and determined that the damper mark is on the first tooth of the timing indicator. My question is, what are the teeth set to indicate? is the first tooth zero degrees before Top Dead Center? If so, what does each tooth represent?
Next, what do you recommend for timing on my engine? So far I have changed to exhaust headers, 2 1/2" V8 cat-back exhaust, hi-flow cat, opened up the air box in the dual snorkels, and swapped in an aluminum driveshaft. It's definitely got some pep in its step, but do I have the best timing for this engine?

If you look close enough or maybe try cleaning up the timing tab you will see the numbers. Don't remember exactly but I think they are in increments of 4 starting from the 0 mark.. Somebody else might have better info but if my memory serves me well I think 12 degrees to 14 degree is the most base timing you want. Ah I miss my 3.1 .

Re: Timing pointer question

Hi Maroe624,
Thanks for the comment. I found some old pics online, and it looks like you are correct about the timing marks. Mine is set on the leftmost tooth, so I think it is set for 12* BTDC, so it seems like it is at the max. The engine runs really good, with nice throttle response.

Another question is, I have read that to set the base timing, I need to unplug the connector to the distributor with the tan wire . I have looked everywhere under the hood, but there is no single-wire connector going to the dizzy. Just the two multi-wire connectors on the dizzy. Am I missing something?

No problem bro. Yeah that connector is actually way off to the passenger side of the engine bay near the blower motor/ ac area, you will see it poking out of the harness.
