V6 Swap ECM Questions

Hello all, I'm working on swapping a 2.8 V6 out of a 86' firebird into my 88' camaro. To my knowledge, the only difference between these two motors is that in the earlier 80s GM had the 2.8s balanced differently than they did in the later 80s. With this in mind, my question is would my ECM out of my 88' work with the 86' motor? Or should I keep the 86' ECM? The only problem I see possibly coming up with that is that the 86' was automatic and my 88' is a 5spd manual. I'm not great with ECM stuff and once the 86' motor is built I'd hate for it to tear itself apart because I'm running the wrong computer. I've also noticed on ebay most of the listing's for the ecm say 85-88 making me think they're the same maybe? I don't know. Any help would be great!

Re: V6 Swap ECM Questions

I would reference something besides eBay to confirm the ECM service number is the same for both. If the ECM is the same service number, you keep the PROM that matches the transmission.
