88 2.8 V6 Timing Trouble

Hey guys, back with another issue on my 88' project. I just finished a full rebuild on the 2.8 motor, including all sensors, rering, bearings, injectors, etc. Now that it's all in, I can't get the car to quite start right. I didn't mark the distributor's placement prior to disassembly because I knew it was way off beforehand. I had it in the other night and it ran good for a few minutes before I had to kill it and call it a night. After this I caught some motivation to try and time it (forgetting to unplug the est connector) and subsequently loosing timing. I think I just got lucky the first time, how can I make sure I correctly set it in this time? Thanks!
