I have a 1986 Sport Coupe with the 2.8l and the 700r4, and anytime I come up to a stop light or sign, the idle gets really low, and I have to shift the car into neutral, or it will stall out. The thing is when under load, the motor runs great and feels good, anyone know what could be causing this?

 

Assuming the 2.8 is efi and Vss codes stored ?

I just checked and it is not throwing a vss code, but it is the efi, that's my bad, still learning car stuff

 

I wonder if the tcc is staying locked , have you tried to unplug to see if it stops stalling ?

 

Ill need to try when i get home later today, that would explain the idle and stalling

 

I would atleast unplug the white connector on the transmission and see if it cures it. Could be a bad switch for the brake tcc/unlock. Just a guess though

 

Did you find the cause? I have the exact same issue going on and I feel lost. I have a 92 with the 3.1, but mine also stalls when coming to a stop or slowing for a turn.

 

I did! It ended up being the computer, it wasn’t sending a signal to the fuel pump, and that was causing it to stall, new computer was around 300 so it wasn’t too bad, hope this helps!

 

Thank you! I've come across a few people with similar issues that ended up being the computer. I'll look more into it, not sure how to test if the computer is bad or not though.

 

I ended up having to take mine to a shop, they had the equipment and tools to test the computer
