How are they useless? The air helps convert Carbon Monoxide to Carbon Dioxide.

It also oxidizes HC's to create clean water vapor. I'd still ditch mine in a heartbeat if I could ever find a pulley.

For the 5.7L F-Body motors, the AIR Pump delete pulley GM part number is 10186167. This part has an "ex" code (for export only), therefore you local GM dealer won't be able to order it. I ordered mine with no problem through GMPartsdirect.com. It was about $42 as I recall. It works great, and you use the stock belt.

See Ya, Mike........

If you can't find the pully no biggie just get a shorter belt. Measure the path of the belt going the direction needed with a piece of string. The length number will translate into a belt number, or something very close(Usually within 1/2") But Air pumps do not take alot of parasitic HP, Maybe 1-2 max. I would actually keep it and find a way to convert it inso a crank case vacuum pump. It will not vreate vacuum like the 400 buck moroso but it will create some!.

Smog pumps being useless can be a fact. Because the power it takes to run the pump usually almost cancels out the gains it creates. On a larger engine it would work fine, but on our V-6 it probably almost cancels out, and on Ford Tempo's, its better to now have the pump... lol

my $.02

i'll answer that after someone gives me a straight answer how to get rid of mine

j/k

anyways, not trying to anybody, i forgot exactly what he told me, but it had to do with why no new cars come with them anymore, not only because they take so much power to run them but because they work rather ineffecient, because the engine now has more strain on it-------thus it cuts down on effeciency, thus using more gas---thus emitting more pollution------it was something to that effect

i'll have to go look in my notebook

Yeah my dad is a mechanic and will second that. Hence the Ford tempo runs better without; along with most other cars. Like you said, it takes more gas, and power to run it, therefore causing it to be uneffective.

No.
Todays current designed engines are more fuel efficent, they have less byproduct to dispose of.
All a "smog pump" does is injest extra air into a chamber to "complete" the fuel mixture burning, which (more fuel completly burnt) equals less left over fuel to eliminate by an external driven pump system.
Does it take HP, big deal. .5 to 4HP.
Can my kid grow up in cleaner breathing air, FINALLY in Los Angeles.?
Yes.
Leave it on.
You loose nothing and gain a healthier life.
Or buy a more modern car and eliminate the smog pump, that way.
Since I just visited back east, I can pass this along.
New Jersey air didn't look so pretty. Like old LA smog air. I was by Trenton and all along the Garden State Parkway to go to Conn.
I "MISSED" the Newark sewage dumps.
Keep your current air, clean. You'll never know how much you'll miss that clean air, until it's gone.
I waited 20 years for LA air to clean up. What a dream come true.

Most new GM cars have electric smog pumps. Also, I agree that a belt driven smog pump will cause some parasitic power loss, but REALLY......how much power could it possibly rob?

Personally, i want to get rid of mine cause the pump keeps going bad.
