I've been Smogified! Ruff! (aka Disturbed's "Stupified") I passed!!!
Well, I passed the sniffer again! I was a bit worried, since my TCC hasn't locked up in a while, and I thought it would affect my numbers. And, I guess it did! Over the weekend, I cleaned out the TB/Plenum, put my stock air box in (with a clean, new air filter), checked the timing (it was dead-on at 10 deg BTDC), and put a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass" in a full tank of 93 octane. Then, it took 3 1/2 hours of driving to get my tank to be almost empty. I filled it up again last night, and went for the test this morning.

I had a dodge lazer one time that I had to set the idle high(1200) RPMs and put in an AFPR and set it LOW and Passed with flying colors. So much that the guy wanted to know what I did. Double T's #'s for the orginial try, then cut them in half for the 2nd try.

I'm also surprised that your CO count was so high. When I took my test I used and old paper filter I had laying around. It had about 3,000 miles on it and didn't seem to affect my results.

I passed today also although it was in my wife's 92 Mercury, I put on a new exhaust but it still has the orginial converter, and it actually "Fast Passed"
Just for the heck of it I asked to Tech guy about swapping in a V8 in my Camaro and he said that all they check is the chasis so what ever engines was orginially offered in my 84 Camaro I could put in it and it would pass..so if I put in a '72 350 as long as it has the smog equipment that would of been on an '84 Camaro w/the V8 it would pass. There was alot more info he gave me but I don't feel like typing it all in right now.

If your test is exactly like ours, then I don't think the TCC would come into play. In CA we run it on the dyno at 15 mph and then at 25 mph......considering lockup doesn't occur until aprox. 35-40 mph it shouldn't have been a factor.

NO! NJ got the CALI emission test!??!?! when did this happen!? NO! Now my car will never pass...when did the new emission test start. my dad just went a lil while ago and i dont think he did it.
I "guess" I qualify for your answer about performance cams.
Having the 3.4, I do have a more aggressive cam profile.
Not having my paperwork in hand, Tom, Do a search. My numbers were so low, the guy stated that while he was doing my smog test.
My engine size made no difference.
IT DOES LOOK IDENTICAL TO A 2.8 on purpose!
My ignition made all the difference (highest igntion power I could put under my hood for the dollars).
And great compression, too.
The CA type test is quite fair, as long as they don't jump the foot off the gas, during the high RPM to low idle test part (to load up the pollutants to flow out exhaust).
Ya just gotta find an honest tester and have all the stuff working & in place.
Seems like you'll need a 3.4 if you have 200K miles!
Having the 3.4, I do have a more aggressive cam profile.

Thanks guys! And yeah, bub, my car has 228,000 miles on it... I'm so glad it passed. 
Yeah, I don't get the CO. (Damn, I gotta remember to shelve that new air filter for the "next" emissions test in 2004!) What's odd is that when the mechanic came back from driving the car, I asked him how it felt, and he said "bad; it's stumbling all over the place". I thought he was feeling the 228,000 miles. But, when I left, and even now when I'm driving around, the car seems slow to respond, and will stumble every now and then from a stop light or stop sign. I wonder what happened- and if it's affecting my CO. He also told me I had an exhaust leak, but he wouldn't "go crazy on me for it"- I didn't think I had any exhaust leaks. Hm.
Karl, THANK YOU!! Ya know, I never realized that (about your 3.4 having the aggressive cam and passing)!!! Hot Damn, that's beautiful.
And since 'thatsme' said the NJ test is not as strict as the california test (see my msg about Prepping for Smog), maybe that guarantees me a passing grade! Looks like I'll find out eventually, eh?

They're the privaticized company that NJ went with; and then we had all these problems, and lost $$ on it... but "thatsme" said the NJ test isn't the same as Cali. I just posted a lengthy reply on the nj emissons test. Its under the first post by tom p about passing the test. Where did You get the "Guranteed to Pass" stuff from. I swaped out my 2.8 Fi for a carbed 350. I have no emission controlls. I'm trying to pass the 2500 rmp test. If I can pass with that it will save me from having to mix racing fuel in with my gas and possibly burning up the cat. I need to get this thing to pass. Its pretty bad that the inspoector has been running around with a reject sticker for the last 8 months.

Pep Boys had the Guaranteed to Pass. It comes in a little box, almost like Slick50, with the bottle in the box. The guarantee looks like a pain in the *** to cash in on; you send a copy of the failed test in, the receipt for the G2P in, and a receipt "for repairs needed to pass the vehicle".
Kind of sucks for those of us that do our own repairs!
Thatsme, a lonnng time ago, Hot Rod reviewed the HP & emissions of a big block motor to see how catalytic convertors affected it. They ran it with no cat, an aftermarket high-flow cat, and finally, a GM cat. The dyno and sniffer showed some cool results- the GM cat "lost" 1 or 2 HP over the high-flow unit. BUT- the GM cat reduced emissions a few hundred percent MORE than the aftermarket cat!
The idea is that all cats were designed poorly in the 70's, which gave them a bad rep, which made people forever want to "gut the cat" or swap it out for a high-flow unit. Now, the auto manufacturers realized that a free-flowing cat actually helps the engine perform better, their catalytic convertors aren't as restrictive anymore. But, the emissions can be reduced much more with the GM one.
So.... I have this plan in the back of my head- if I ever fail the dyno emissions, and can't do anything to get my car to pass (besides removing important stuff like a cam), I'll spend the $300 for a GM cat.
