Uh oh... Is my motor going bad? Knockin?

Here's what happened. My car was really huffin and puffin, so i suspected timing since everything else was new. Sure enough, the the timing was at 0*, so i set it to 10*. That totaly solved all the low end huffin and puffin but now it brings a new problem.

When i'm hard on the gas, like 75% to WOT, the motor clunks. Is that knock? It kinds sounds like when someone almost stalls driving a manual and the RPMs get really low. That "clunk clunk clunk" sound. It happenes at any RPM when i'm hard on it but I don't hear it at idle, or when revving it in neutral.

Why would the sound become very apperent when I brought the timing back to where it was? Is my motor goin bad?!?! Thanks alot!

Change your oil.. Move up to a SAE 30 or 5W30... Add a can of engine restore and then see if it is still knockin.. Also chaeck your Radiator fluid, and add a gas treatment to clean the injectors and raise the octane.

if u had a real knock it would do it all the time. it does it in gear at 75-wot, but not in neutral.. hmmmm.. ur flywheel may be missing teeth. that is something to defiently check, its a major PITA to check that tho.

Just from what your describing it sounds like your timing is way too far advanced under a load and it is pinging real bad. You need to check timing when you carry your RPMs up with an adjustable timing light. I think 34* is the most you want at full advance. Your timing advance may be mess up.
Also a lean fuel mixture will do the same via vacuum leaks check your EGR and plenium gaskets.

Sounds like it's knocking or pinging. Check timing again. MAKE SURE THE HARMONIC BALANCER HASN'T SLIPPED. Was your timing 0 degrees with the EST disconnected?

Also, check backup timing. With the EST disconnected, your timing should advance around 1500-2000 RPMS. If it retards or if it jumps around erratically you need to rebuild your distributor.

The timing is correct. I did it with the EST disconnected and its set at 10* at idle. It moves smoothly as the RPM's climb. Anothing thing i noticed today, it doesnt occur above 4500 RPM. There arent any vac leaks.

The oil i'm running is Mobil 1 Clean Drive Blend full synthetic 10w-30. I've been running the oil for bout a year now and the problem just sprung up.

If your timing was way off you may have fauled the crap out of your plugs. Check your plugs. You may only find one or 2 that are fauled, but it will be enough to through it off. This happened a just recently. I thought some thing major was wrong. It was just my plugs.
